Athi-Patra RUGA The Exile According to the Elder - 2014 Laine, fleurs artificielles et fils sur toile de tapisserie 220 × 184 cm Wool, artificial flowers and threads on tapestry canvas 86.61 × 72.44 in. Athi-Patra Ruga is a South African artist born in 1984. A performer, video artist, photographer, and textile designer, his protean works sometimes straddle the border between fashion and contemporary art, drawing viewers into a fantastical universe tinged with provocation and eroticism. Most of his works are linked to the mythology of “Azania,” a utopian dreamland with a matriarchal system, which he uses to rewrite his personal history within the broader framework of the traumas of Apartheid and the collective history of South Africa. The futuristic “Azania” is colorful, baroque, and queer, freeing itself from the shackles of gender and race with which the artist was confronted during his youth. This tapestry depicts the character “the Elder,” the only male figure in Azania, and is also a self-portrait of the artist. In this invented mythology, “the Elder” is in exile after Azania’s First War. This tutelary figure echoes the story of his father, who was himself in exile during South Africa’s liberation struggle. Through the materials used, the artist underlines the ambivalence of this situation of exile, sad in its uprooting but also rich in the new cultural experiences it brings. The abundance of artificial flowers and the predominance of black evoke mourning, an image of hieratic devotion, while the accumulation of jewels and the staging blur the lines and lead us toward the vision of a pop-culture icon. The virtuosity and richness of the composition lend an almost historical status to the piece, which becomes an integral part of Azania’s mythology and pantheon of whimsical characters.

            Mar. 20, 2024

            Athi-Patra Ruga "Manifest Destiny/Autistic Empire"

            Est: $15,000 - $30,000

Athi-Patra Ruga (South African, b. 1984). Wool and thread on tapestry canvas titled "Lizalis Indinga Lakho/Autistik Imperium (Manifest Destiny/Autistic Empire)" depicting four figures surrounded by cheetahs, a blue crane, and tropical plants, 2017. Signed along the left edge along the verso. Provenance: The artist via WHATIFTHEWORLD Gallery, Cape Town, South Africa; Private Minnesota Collection. Exhibition: WHATIFTHEWORLD Gallery, "Queens in Exile 2014–2017," 2017. Lot Essay: Athi-Patra Ruga often explores themes of gender, sexuality, culture, and ideology in his multi-media works. Themes of sexuality, HIV/AIDS, African culture, and queerness in post-apartheid South Africa are recurrent in his works. They often raise questions about public spaces, the body in relation to these spaces, and what is "normal." The present work was the headliner for his "Queens in Exile 2014-2017" show exhibited at WHATIFTHEWORLD Gallery in 2017. The work was featured in ArtForum in March 2018. The tapestry is based on a cartoon drawn by Ruga and was collaboratively embroidered by the artist and three assistants. Seated on a peacock chair, referencing a 1967 photo of Huey P. Newton, is Her Majesty the Versatile Queen Ivy. Her face is based on the only photo Ruga possesses of his maternal grandmother, Nompuku Millie Ngalonkulu. In her head is the decapitated head of The Elder, a character from earlier exhibitions of Ruga's. On bent knees in front of this character is a comic book mummy, the Walking Wound, a recurring motif representing corporeal trauma.

Athi-Patra Ruga SOUTH AFRICAN 1984- Ilulwane ... he's not one of youz thread on tapestry canvas 86 by 136cm E X H IB IT E D WHATIFTHEWORLD, Cape Town, The Teeth are the Only Bones that Show, 6 October to 14 November 2010. LITERATURE: Athi-Patra Ruga (2013) Beyond Every Horizon there is Another One: The Works 2006–2013, Cape Town: WHATIFTHEWORLD. Illustrated in colour on page 55. Embroidered tapestries are integral to Ruga’s richly metaphorical and narrative practice, serving as sketches for embryonic ideas as much as elaborations of his inventive mythologies. Ruga’s earliest tapestries were textile interpretations of Irma Stern’s 1940s paintings of Watusi (Tutsi) people from the African Great Lakes region. Ruga first encountered Stern as a high school student at the Belgravia Art Centre in East London. The present Lot, from 2010, forms part of a follow-up series of homoerotic portraits of male figures, some fictional, later translated into physical performances. The long-nosed figure in this work elliptically and metaphorically addresses taboos around male circumcision in Xhosa culture. ‘Ilulwane’ is Xhosa for bat, but also functions as a taunt in relation to young men who have opted for a hospital circumcision over traditional ritual. “God damn you if you are not from the bush! Then you are not a man, you are ilulwane,” explained Ruga in 2012. His work visually establishes this pariah status by invoking the Pinocchio-inspired metaphor of lies producing the bodily deformity of a long nose. In 2011 Ruga participated in the fourth edition of Performa, a New York-based performance biennial, where he staged a synchronised-swimming performance exploring the complications of tradition and modernity embodied by the ambiguous insider-outside character of Ilulwane. 1.
