Landscape painter, Etcher, b. 1628 - d. 1682

(born 1628; died 1682) Dutch landscape painter. Ruisdael was born in Haarlem, The Netherlands and was active in Haarlem and Amsterdam. He is often considered one of the greatest Dutch landscape artists. Ruisdael learned to paint at a young age from his father, who was a painter, art dealer and frame maker, and from his uncle, the painter Solomon van Ruysdael. His earliest work dates from 1646 and in 1648, Ruisdael became a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Haarlem. Ruisdael traveled extensively in The Netherlands and studied painting in Germany, before settling back in Amsterdam around 1655 and establishing a studio complete with apprentices, which allowed him to produce a large body of work. Famous for his imposing landscapes, lighting and rendering of space, these characteristics distinguished him from his contemporaries. Ruisdael was able to inject seemingly quiet and mundane subjects such as trees, with emotion, tension and drama, causing contemplation in the viewer. Innovative not only in the eyes of his Dutch contemporaries, Ruisdael’s influence can also be seen throughout the following centuries in the works of Constable, Gainsborough, and in members of the Barbizon School. Ruisdael was also a doctor and died in Amsterdam in 1682, and is buried in Haarlem.

The rocky and hilly countryside in the present work clearly draws inspiration from van Ruisdael’s stay in Steinfurt and Bad Bentheim around 1650. Accompanied by Nicolaes Berchem, the artist was particularly drawn to the castle of Bad Bentheim, which he later depicted in several of his works, again using a similar low vanishing point, as is evident in the present work. One of these depictions in a vertical composition that resonates with the present work, depicting Bentheim Castle near a waterfall, is conserved in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. no. SK-A-347). Jacob van Ruisdael is generally considered the most outstanding landscape painter among the 17th century Dutch masters. Although his extensive oeuvre consists exclusively of landscapes, he managed to arrive at such wonderful and clever variations within the genre. From his calm series of views of the city of Haarlem, with the bleaching fields, to his iconic Jewish Cemetery (see Mauritshuis, The Hague, inv. no. 155; and Detroit Institute of Arts, inv. no. 26.3), van Ruisdael’s approximately 700 listed paintings have been acquired by the most respected museums, galleries, and private collectors throughout the centuries. His landscapes have inspired contemporary artists, as well as later renowned figures such as Thomas Gainsborough in the 18th century and John Constable a century later.

          Certificate S. Slive, Cambridge, MA, 15 January 2015. In 1644, Ruisdael travelled to the south-east coast of Norway and the area around Gothenburg in western Sweden. Although he stayed in the region for less than a year and returned to Haarlem in 1645 to open his workshop, this period had a lasting influence on his work and served as the basis for numerous recurring elements in his compositions, including mountain landscapes, fir and spruce trees, rushing waterfalls, log cabins and views of the rocky coast. In his home town of Haarlem, Ruisdael was also able to study the works of Allart van Everdingen (1621-1675) in detail. He had also travelled to Scandinavia to study nature and specialised in the depiction of so-called "Scandinavian landscapes". In this painting from the 1670s, Ruisdael used the popular motifs of his Scandinavian views. In addition to a rushing stream breaking over rocks, tall pine trees and an expansive sky, the painter has also included a light wooden bridge in the background, over which two figures are crossing the turbulent water. Such a bridge is frequently found in Ruisdael's waterfall paintings from this period, for example in a "Waterfall with a Wooden Bridge" in Dresden, Staatliche Kunstsammlung (inv. no. 1497). Seymour Slive described the present painting in his 2001 catalogue raisonné on the basis of an old black and white photograph (no. 187) and confirmed it as a work by Ruisdael in 2015 on the basis of a colour photograph. Ruisdael became so famous for his waterfall paintings that Arnold Houbraken reported having seen a theatre play in 1721 about the artist's name "Ruis-dael" ("noisy valley"). Ruisdael, he continued, "painted both native and foreign landscapes, but especially those in which one sees water tumbling from one rock to another, to finally spread out with roars in ravines and valleys: and he could depict spray or foaming water pelting the rocks, so naturally clear and translucent that it seemed real" (quoted from "The Golden Age of Dutch Landscape Painting", exhibition catalogue, Madrid, 1994, p. 199). Jacob van Ruidsdael's reputation as the most talented and versatile Dutch landscape painter of the Golden Age has remained unbroken since his lifetime.
