Ruith' lower right 54.7 x 36.3 cm Framed and glazed Horace van Ruith (1839-1923) was a British artist known for his detailed and evocative watercolours active in the late 19th and early 20th century. His career as an artist took off in the 1880s when he worked in India and he later consolidated his reputation when he moved to London in 1892. He was a regular contributor to the Royal Academy and worked in oils and water-colors, and predominantly made landscapes, portraits, and scenes from ‘daily life’.He documented scenes encountered during his travels throughout Europe, the Middle East, and India, capturing the essence of these diverse cultures through his art. A captivating watercolour by Horace van Ruith, depicting a coffee bearer. The figure, likely of Middle Eastern or Indian origin, stands confidently, holding a steaming cup of coffee on a small tray. HORACE VAN RUITH (BRITISH 1839-1923) Entrance to Holland House, Kensington, London Signed Horace Van Ruith (lower right) Watercolour 39.5 x 25.7cm (15 1/2 x 10in) Provenance: With Doig, Wilson & Wheatley, Edinburgh Captain HCP Hamilton, Moyne, Durrow Co. Laois. and thence by descent Van Ruith was born in Capri, probably of Russian origin. He specialised in portraiture, landscapes and genre scenes in oil and watercolour. Although subsequently based in England he spent several years working in Italy. He visited Bombay sometime between 1879 and 1884 and is known to have established a studio in the city. He painted a number of works portraying local people, especially those in various trades. On his return to London he took part in the Colonial and Indian Exhibition opened by Queen Victoria in 1886.

Horace Van Ruith (1840-1923), Promenading in Rome

oil on canvas, signed and noted "Rome" at lower left, presented in a later gilt composition frame. SS 21 x 30 in.; DOA 26.5 x 34.5 in. Russian born to a German family, Horace Van Ruith studied at the School of Art in Stuttgart and later in Munich. He moved to Italy in 1874, first in Milan and then Rome, until 1878. It was during this period that he likely completed the present painting. Rohatgi, Pauline et al., 'Bombay to Mumbai: Changing Perspectives', Marg Publications, 1997 ⁂ Van Ruith visited Bombay sometime between 1879 and 1884 and is known to have established a studio in the city. He later returned to London where he exhibited at the Colonial & Indian exhibition opened by Queen Victoria in 1886 to positive reception. The artist also exhibited at the Royal Academy.
