Granada school of the first half of the eighteenth century. Circle of TORCUATO RUIZ DEL PERAL (Granada, 1708-1773). "Child Jesus". Carved and polychrome wood. Original pedestal.

        Est: €3,000 - €3,500

Granada school of the first half of the eighteenth century. Circle of TORCUATO RUIZ DEL PERAL (Granada, 1708-1773). "Child Jesus". Carved and polychrome wood. Original pedestal. Measures: 31 cm high (sculpture); 47 cm (with pedestal). Devotional image of the Infant Jesus, carved in wood in round and polychrome, representing the body with great anatomical perfection, showing the study of the natural, although it is an image intended to be dressed in rich clothes made ex profeso. The Child appears standing, in a dynamic position with the right knee bent, the left foot forward and the torso slightly inclined to the right, accompanying the movement of the hand, which is raised in a gesture of blessing. The left hand is halfway up, extended in a compassionate gesture towards the faithful praying at his feet. The face stands out especially, sweet and charged with emotion, which in its serious expression reflects the knowledge of its dramatic destiny. The figure stands on a carved and gilded wooden base, in a clearly mannerist style, crowned by a cushion with tassels at the corners.

The introduction of the Italian Renaissance in the Netherlands was slow and difficult due to the fact that it came up against a solid native art of the highest level and great tradition. Thus, the acceptance of the new style coming from Italy was late and the Gothic decorations remained for a long time. Nevertheless, there were Flemish artists who traveled to Italy and returned, converted into "Italianists", spreading the new style. This is particularly the case of the Academy of Haarlem and the school of Mechelen, important centers of the new trend. There everything will be done in the Italian way, and there will even be a Dutch Vasari, Carel Van Mander, who in 1604 published the biographies of the illustrious painters of his land.
