      FRANCISCO RUIZ FERRANDIS (Valencia, 1909-1992). "Marina", 1948. Oil on cardboard. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. Size: 16 x 13 cm; 35,5 x 33 cm (frame). In this marine the author presents us with a calm sea, with a horizon placed in the centre of the composition, differentiating the area of the sky and the sea clearly. This use of a simple composition encourages the viewer to focus attention on the central motif of the scene, which is not a marina per se, but the presentation of these rowers being steered in a boat at night. A painter of landscapes, flowers, genre scenes and historical subjects, Francisco Ruiz Ferrandis is chiefly remembered as a miniaturist of flowers, although he also produced medium-format paintings. He trained in this technique in a fan-painting workshop, and in 1944 he held his first exhibition, at the Salones de la Asociación de la Prensa (Press Association Salons). Later he continued to show his work in various Spanish cities, as well as in Ireland, Belgium and Portugal. At the age of fifty he moved to Malaga, where he opened his own painting academy, teaching until the late seventies.
