Jose Tence Ruiz (b. 1958) Senorita de la Troiiana

          Est: ₱200,000 - ₱260,000

Senorita de la Troiiana signed and dated 2009 (lower center) oil on primed linen 72”x 48” (183 cm x 122 cm) On the Kotillions and Señorita dela Troiiana The Kotillion series evolved from over fifteen years of my fascination with how enlarging the human body with clothing was a prerequisite for gaining power. Thus, “noble” or powerful beings (monks, kings, bishops, rockstars, superhero action figures, witch doctors, brides, debutantes, Kotillion-bound belles) all expanded their bodies and attached power to this. The Napoleonic, pre-Victorian or Baroque gown seemed to me both absurd but effective in this exercise. Then I bring to this a contemporary set of comments. One: that we are permeated by media (all we know of this current postmodern world has a large percentage of origins in TV, internet, radio, CDs, DVDs, print, etc.) Another is that media lubricates its often tragic messages to its public with the beauty of its messengers (either its models, actors, or anchor women and men). Another is the fact that for all my personal skepticism, even as a veteran artist, I am still vulnerable to the sway and swoon of beauty found in media. I catch myself and admonish me, saying don’t fall in love with creatures on TV (which is the translation of the Tagalog slang “wag ma-inlab sa tao sa TV”). Might they love all us million viewers back? I doubt. Art should above all be about one’s time. Any memorable artist is obliged to reflect this, whether in communally accessible or very personal terms. My expression hovers hopefully and usefully somewhere in- between. I am in the present, aware of how the present influences me, and I distance myself as much as I can take and try to grasp this and even convey this through the works. It’s a constant evolution but I find lots of resonance available. Troiiana is a “tagalization” of the Trojan woman (those immortal beauties under siege from the Greeks). Señorita dela Troiiana is like the young lady of a noble family, but obviously there is critical content in my choice of surname. The lady here is inspired by an appealing Filipina news anchor named Ginger and is clothed in all manner of magnified virus molecules (you might recognize SARS, A[H1N1], HIV, Avian Flu, etc. here, but she also hovers over a mound of used warrior’s helmets, another form by which we besiege each other—war). Which will succeed in toppling us—infection or human hatred? H. G. Wells asked this same question more than a century ago in his War of the Worlds. We await the verdict as conveyed to us by the beguiling lady anchor. She must stand above it all in her calm pulchritude and convey. And then on to the next channel. (Jose Tence Ruiz, November 2009)

It represents his distinctive mantra of reminding himself that it is through experiencing all the necessary toiling that he can achieve all his burning desires as an artist. Ruiz had expounded on the meaning of this particular piece: “I have used this triptych to ruminate on these overlapping struggles, the ones we have for survival, the ones we have for communication, the one we have for getting from place to place. I have taken anatomical rendering of the physical properties utilized in all the aspirations I have ruminated on and juxtaposed them with specters of where they might apply.” Some of the juxtapositions of the Corazon, Lengua, Pie includes the intrepid and humane tenderness given to the impoverished pole dancer as she confronts aggravation and oppression as a way to her humble dreams; the multilingual talent of Jose Rizal that he used to convey and express his individual and nationalist aspirations; and the sheer tension experienced by a sprinter who, in a hopeful attempt to break speed records for honor and distinction, dashes to shatter speed records. These are rendered by Ruiz in an allegorical manner as he sails through with great endeavor the rugged seas of the artistic world. This piece is the artist’s reminder to himself. Nonetheless, when we deeply delve into its intrinsic meaning, we may recognize our tribulations and gently remind ourselves of “a calm after the storm.”

Jose Tence Ruiz (b. 1956) Granduchess Sacco Di Pelle signed and dated 2009 (lower center) oil on primed linen 70” x 60” (178 cm x 152 cm)      WRITE UP: Jose Tence Ruiz’ ironic and playful Kotillions are a series that he says represents “more than two decades of wrestling with a particular visual problem.” It is his answer to the question he posed to himself : “How does one encapsulate or compress in a single icon the disparities of contemporary Philippine society? Decadence and a feudal-dynastic surplus on the one hand and the desperate, grinding poverty of the majority, on the other. I came upon one notion, that of Mother Filipinas dressed in a gown of debris. Ostentatious, yet reflective of its disproportion.” For the Kotillions, he would focus on various famous Filipina females, the better to depict “a society propelled by celebrity status.”   The Kotillion that pushed the trope to international renown was at the Philippine Pavilion of the Venice Biennale 2015. Entitled Memento Mora 1, Signora dei Padiglione (Our Lady of the Pavilion) it is a reference to the Filipino exhibition’s location at the Palazzo Mora, Strada Nuova in that city and alludes to his memories of this culturally important time — the return of the Philippines to this world arena after an absence of 51 years.   The Granducchessa Sacco Di Pelle (Grand Duchess of the Bag of Flesh/Skin) is “painted with a nod to (CNN newscaster) Pinky Webb.” He describes her as clad in a tumble of black leather designer handbags, standing in a mire of dogs, sheep, goats, rabbits. She is holding a stop sign with an ampalaya (a Filipino vegetable known for its bitterness) an illusion to what envy a designer accessory can cause. In the other hand, she wields a scepter crowned by a talisman-like but comical katol spiral (an old-fashioned mosquito-repellant.)   Tence Ruiz calls it, “a bit of a paean to vanity.” He notes wryly, however, that indeed, “Handbags are a powerful weapon, in many ways.” (Lisa Guerrero Nakpil)

Jose Tence Ruiz (b.1958) Orang Pieta Jose “Bogie” Tence Ruiz (b. 1958, Manila) is a multimedia artist who lives and works in the Philippines. He was educated at the Ateneo de Manila in his early years, and graduated cum laude with a Fine Arts degree from the University of Santo Tomas, Manila in 1979. Ruiz has worked as both a multi-media artist and an independent writer, consultant, and curator for prestigious institutions such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the Pasig City Arts Museum, Neo-Angono Artists Collective, and the Ateneo Art Gallery. He has been honored many times for his work: he is a five-time Art Association of the Philippines winner (1979 - 2005), and a recipient of the 1998 13 Artists Award given by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). He is also an Araw ng Maynila Awardee for New Media (2003). He was chosen as one of the artists representing the Philippines in the 2015 Venice Biennale in Italy. As part of “Tie A String Around The World” curated by Patrick Flores, his installation, entitled “Shoal” (2015), was displayed in the Palazzo Mora, the space for the Philippine pavilion at the Biennale. Shoal paid homage to the marooned BRP Sierra Made in the West Philippine Sea. Jose Tence Ruiz (b.1956) Madonna Bellumbella In this powerful allegorical portrait, Madonna Bellumbella, Jose Tence Ruiz visualizes the muse of war as a heavily stylized figure (“bellum,” after all, is Latin for “war”). Her metallic, hollow dress is made up of concatenation of Bs, with one proudly emblazoned on her chest, which recalls Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter. Striding against a dystrophic sky, she effortlessly carries the hulking detritus of the machinery of destruction — at once evidence of what has come to pass and a dire warning for the future. This work, which belongs to a continuing series of Tence Ruiz’s depiction of women as harbingers of history, revivifies painting’s role of providing symbolic representation to the large and sweeping movements of the human saga across the ages. signed and dated 2009 (lower left) oil on canvas 72” x 48” (182 cm x 122 cm) Property from the Dean Leovino Ma Garcia Collection
