Founded in 1864, it took the name Rheingold from Richard Wagner’s epic Ring Cycle, emphasizing the company’s German heritage while also giving it a flair of the fanciful. Under Kaiser Wilhelm I, it became the official champagne with which to christen new warships in the country. Rumpf was a painter and an illustrator who designed a series of posters just before the First World War. The gentlemen's haberdashery Prince of Wales was his major client, commissioning at least seven posters, but he also designed for bars and cabarets. DFP-III 2759 (var).

But after a lorgnette-assisted thorough once-over, even the grand dame of nit-picking has to concede that "Only Karlstadt-Porges cleans and dyes that well." (Art Nouveau; German)

Rumpf was a painter and an illustrator who designed a series of posters just before the First World War. The gentleman's haberdashery, Prince of Wales, was his major client (see Swann Art Nouveau Poster Auction #1945, lot 89), although he also designed posters for bars and cabarets. This classic fashion illustration highlights not only the man's elegant tie, but also his shirt and cufflinks. By cleverly making the gentleman's vest a continuation of the black background, Rumpf makes everything else stand out even more brightly. The typography is as clean, neat and well-groomed as the image itself. DFP III 2777.

By far Rumpf's biggest client was the men's store Prince of Wales, which specialized in formal British clothes and was located in an elegant Berlin neighborhood. Das Frühe Plakat lists seven posters that Rumpf designed for their firm, and he most likely designed their catalogues as well. DFP III 2774.
