Franz Rumpler (1848-1922), Monkeys on Gold Ground, c. 1870

      Est: €1,920 - €2,400

Oil on panel Austria, circa 1870 Franz Rumpler (1848-1922) - Austrian genre painter Verso with estate stamp of the artist and an old handwritten label Dimensions: 26.5 x 12.5 cm Good condition Provenance: from the estate of the artist; private collection, Austria Fine, small study by the accomplished Austrian genre painter Franz Rumpler; the auction record for a work by the artist is set at over €17,000 The present oil sketch by Franz Rumpler is a design for a souvenir presented to the ladies at a ball. These small, usually skillfully crafted gifts enjoyed great popularity in the late 19th century. They commonly took the form of a booklet, which should serve as a dance card. But as usual were also hand-held fans, plaques, miniatures or mirrors. The present composition depicts an opulent arrangement of flowers, a vase, a fan and two monkeys on a gold background. Despite its smaller scale and sketch-like depiction, the work nonetheless shows Rumpler's technical skill and the delicacy of his brushwork. The verso bears the estate stamp of the artist 'Nachlass / Rumpler' as well as an old label inscribed by an unknown hand and a typographical sign with artist's dates of birth and death. The work is in good condition with slight signs of age. The frame has been repaired. The framed work measures 30 x 15.5 cm, the wood panel measures 26.5 x 12.5 cm. Franz Rumpler (1848-1922) Franz Rumpler studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts where he was a pupil of Eduard von Engerth. After his studies he travelled to Italy and Paris. From the mid-1890s he held a professorship in history painting at the Academy. Many painters, including Moritz Coschell, Josef Floch, Wilhelm Victor Krausz, Kolo Moser and Josef Stoitzner were students of his. In 1897, his largest exhibition including 230 of his works. Rumpler painted mainly rural genre scenes but also nudes, portraits and nature studies influenced by impressionism. Works by Franz Rumpler are held in the collections of the Belvedere in Vienna, in the Liechtenstein Gemäldegalerie and the Modern Gallery in Prague.
