Carl Rungius Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, b. 1869 - d. 1959

(born 1869; died 1959) American artist. During his lifetime, Carl Rungius was among the best-known painters of North American game animals. He specialized in big game, painting moose, bear and elk, as well as mountain sheep, goats, deer and antelope. Although animals were his primary interest, his landscape backgrounds were equally well painted. Rungius was born in Germany and received his formal training in Berlin, attending the Berlin School of Art, the Academy of Fine Arts and the School of Applied Arts. His interest in wildlife came naturally as his father was a minister concerned with conservation and his grandfather was a taxidermist and animal painter. When he immigrated to the United States in 1894, he established a studio in New York. That same year, Rungius' uncle in Brooklyn invited him on a trip to the West that resulted in a year's stay. During the summer of 1895, he painted in Yellowstone National Park and other areas of Wyoming. A recognized naturalist and an assiduous student of anatomy and large fauna, Rungius returned to the West many times after his initial trip, traveling from Arizona to Alaska to sketch and collect artifacts to bring back to his New York studio. He eventually established a summer studio in Banff, Alberta, Canada.

Backside reads Sketch for a Moose Painting by Carl Rungius. 9" by 12" unframed. 20 3/8" by 23 1/4" framed. Has a few minor areas of inpainting as shown under black light. Carl Clemens Moritz Rungius (1869 - 1959) was active/lived in New York, Wyoming / Canada. Carl Rungius is known for Wildlife and landscape painting, illustration, etching. Born near Berlin, Germany, Carl Rungius became one of America's most noted wildlife artists, usually working in plein air or directly from nature. His grandfather was a taxidermist and animal hunter, which gave him early exposure to this subject matter. He was also a hunter of big game from childhood, and eventually his lifestyle merged with his art. He studied art in Berlin at the Berlin School of Art, the Academy of Fine Arts, and the School of Applied Arts, and one of his teachers was Paul Meyerheim. His career as a painter began in Berlin in 1889, and much of his early work was in the style of German Romanticism and Realism. He arrived in the United States from his native Rixdorf in 1894, and settled in New York City. He did illustrations for popular magazines, but by 1904 was focused on fine art, and by 1913, was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design. He became a full member in 1920. He fell in love with the Northwest and West, and much of his painting and hunting career of over fifty years was spent packing into the forests and high country of Montana, Wyoming, Arizona, the Yukon, and Canadian Rockies. His specialty was big game such as mountain goats, sheep, deer, and antelope in dramatic landscape settings. In 1895, he took his first trip West, heading to Wyoming and Yellowstone. He spent nearly four months on a ranch in northwest Wyoming where "he gained the first true inspirations for his life's work of depicting western life and animals". (Hassrick 124). He was a big-game hunter, and then did paintings from the trophies. In late September of that same trip, Rungius visited Yellowstone Park from where he apparently did sketches but no extant paintings from those sketches resulted when he returned to his studio in Brooklyn, New York in November. It is thought that the reason he did no Yellowstone paintings was because no rifles were allowed in the Park. However, from memory he did other paintings in Academic style with heavy, rich color and tight detailing--much in contrast to the prevailing impressionism. Rungius returned to Wyoming many times in the future, but this first trip was the turning point in his career in that it directed his focus to painting wildlife. Ultimately it was the Canadian Rockies that held him, and, living in New York most of the year, he built a summer studio home, "The Paintbox" in Banff, Alberta in 1922, and Theodore Roosevelt became a great admirer and collector of his work. After the artist's death in 1959, the Glenbow Foundation maintained his studio as a museum. During these extensive travels, he also became friends with many frontier people and did a series of oil paintings depicting their life. These works, of which there were not many completed, are much sought after for their accuracy and sense of spontaneity. The artist died in New York City.

Housed under glass in likely original frame, back with old gallery label for Arthur H. Harlow & Co. of New York City, NY which notes "signed Artist's Proof". Circa 1925. 9 1/2" x 7 5/8" sight, 15 3/8" x 13 1/2" OA. Catalogue Note: Born near Berlin, Germany, Carl Rungius (1869-1959) was exposed to art, hunting, and taxidermy at a young age. Carl attended the Berlin Art Academy from 1888 to 1890 and spent his free time sketching and studying animals at the Berlin Zoo. In 1894, he was invited on a moose-hunting trip in Maine by his uncle, and Carl went on to travel to Wyoming, which was a pivotal, life-changing experience for the artist, leading him to leave Germany to live in the United States. After the turn of the century, the U.S. saw new efforts in the conservation and protection of natural resources with President Theodore Roosevelt being a noteworthy figure in this movement. Carl initially worked as an illustrator for wildlife magazines, books, and campaigns to protect endangered animals. Around 1909, he decided to become a full-time easel painter and spent much of his time outdoors as an artist and sportsman. He developed his signature style of depicting animals in their natural habitat, being highly romanticized without signs of human impact. As a result, Carl is noted as the first career wildlife artist and an important big-game painter in North America.

Carl Rungius (American, 1869-1959), "Woods Edge at Dusk"

          Est: $7,000 - $10,000

Oil on Canvas. Signed lower right. Carl Rungius (American, 1869-1969) Carl Rungius was a leading American wildlife artist. He was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States and he spent his career painting in the western United States and Canada. Active primarily in the first half of the twentieth century, he earned a reputation as the most important big game painter and the first career wildlife artist in North America. Rungius was an avid sportsman and spent more time in the wilderness than other artists. By direct observation in nature, he was able to gain an exceptional insight into the animals and their environment. Rungius painted both landscapes and wildlife, often with both into a single picture. He situated the animals in their natural environment, a practice that was new to painting in early twentieth century North America. His paintings are highly romanticized and represent an Eden-life world without any signed of human impact.

Carl Clemens Moritz Rungius (American, 1869–1959) After the Storm (Tundra) Signed 'C. Rungius.’ bottom right, oil on canvas 30 x 40 in. (76.2 x 101.6cm) Executed circa 1929. Provenance Private Collection, Newtown, Pennsylvania. Exhibited "Twenty-Ninth Annual Exhibition," California Art Club, Museum of History, Science and Art, Los Angeles, California, November 18-December 31, 1938 (as Tundra). Literature Julian S. Huxley, Mammals and Birds: A Selection of Articles from the New 14th Edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, Britannica Booklet No. 3., Encyclopaedia Britannica, New York, 1929-1933, plate III (upper), facing p. 46 (illustrated). Note We wish to thank Dr. Adam Duncan Harris of the National Museum of Wildlife Art and the Carl Rungius Catalogue Raisonné Committee for confirming that the present painting will be included in the forthcoming digital database of the Artist's work. Tundra (alternatively titled After the Storm), an impressive canvas by German-born American wildlife artist Carl Rungius, depicts a pair of North American moose within a snow-covered landscape. Under an azure sky and against a backdrop of lofty mountain peaks, the moose amble sure-footedly into the composition’s middleground. Sunlight rakes across the canvas, spotlighting the pair’s shovel-shaped antlers and throwing shadows onto the powder below. Exhibited at the California Art Club in 1938, Tundra is a testament to Rungius’ career-long commitment to documenting the West and its wild inhabitants. An avid sportsman and conservationist, with a keen understanding of anatomy, Rungius excelled at situating animals within their natural surroundings, while presenting them to their best advantage. In Tundra, he arranges his specimens in both profile and three-quarter view—an invitation to admire their dappled hides and powerful, yet elegant forms. So faithful were Rungius’ renderings that they were occasionally chosen for reproduction in contemporary reference works. The present painting, illustrated as After the Storm, accompanied an entry in Mammals and Birds: A Selection of Articles from the New 14th Edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica (1929-33). With bold color and confident brushwork, Rungius, at once, celebrates the majesty of his untamed subjects and the splendor of the high country. Although Rungius painted a menagerie of big game—from elk and bear to caribou and bighorn sheep—viewers reserved special praise for his depictions of moose. Fellow outdoorsman and former president, Teddy Roosevelt, upon visiting the artist’s New York studio, identified one work in progress as “the most spirited animal painting [he had] ever seen.” In fresh-to-market examples like Tundra, collectors are reminded of the unspoiled landscapes beloved by the so-called Bull Moose candidate—and of a creature that, in Rungius' own words, was “the essence of the wilderness itself.”
