John Ruskin (England, 1819-1900) etching purchased in 1900 at an Exhibition of Ruskin's works and possessions at his home town in the Lake Region. Image measures 8.25 in. x 5 in. Sheet measures 15.125 in. x 11 in. Unframed, loose and not glued or mounted. Provenance: Estate collection of William Greenbaum, Gloucester, Massachusetts, Proprietor of William Greenbaum Fine Prints. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as condition can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired. Our in-house shipping department will gladly pack and ship any item that fits into a 14x14x14 inch or 30x5x24 inch or equivalent or smaller box/folio if it is not fragile or over 25lbs. Size: 4 x 6 1/8 x 1 1/8 in. #3102 #11 . John Ruskin (February 8th, 1819 - January 20th, 1900) was an English writer, philosopher, art historian, art critic and polymath of the Victorian era. He wrote on subjects as varied as geology, architecture, myth, ornithology, literature, education, botany and political economy. Ruskin was heavily engaged by the work of Viollet-le-Duc which he taught to all his pupils including William Morris. Ruskin’s writing styles and literary forms were equally varied. He wrote essays and treatises, poetry and lectures, travel guides and manuals, letters and even a fairy tale. He also made detailed sketches and paintings of rocks, plants, birds, landscapes, architectural structures and ornamentation. The elaborate style that characterized his earliest writing on art gave way in time to plainer language designed to communicate his ideas more effectively. In all of his writing, he emphasized the connections between nature, art and society. Ruskin was hugely influential in the latter half of the 19th Century and up to the First World War. After a period of relative decline, his reputation has steadily improved since the 1960s with the publication of numerous academic studies of his work. Today, his ideas and concerns are widely recognised as having anticipated interest in environmentalism, sustainability and craft. Ruskin first came to widespread attention with the first volume of “Modern Painters” (1843), an extended essay in defense of the work of J. M. W. Turner in which he argued that the principal role of the artist is “truth to nature.” From the 1850s onward he championed the Pre-Raphaelites, who were in turn influenced by his ideas. His work increasingly focused on social and political issues, and in 1869 Ruskin became the first Slade Professor of Fine Art at the University of Oxford, where he established the Ruskin School of Drawing. Unhappy in nearly all his personal relationships throughout his life, he devoted most of his energy to teaching, creating generations of like-minded scholars, artists, and politicians who helped shape the course of British society for over a century. His death from the flu in 1900 was mourned around the world by people as diverse as Proust, Tolstoy, and Gandhi, and the utopian socialist society he started in 1871, the Guild of St. George, still exists today.

Barrie Feb. 1907" on half title, illustrations by Richard Doyle, a few with childish hand-colouring, some smoke odour, the odd spot or patch of soiling, pencil ownership inscription of Michael Llewellyn Davies to endpaper, light browning to endpapers, hinges weak, original pictorial cloth, gilt, some light rubbing and marking to covers, 8vo, 1904. ⁂ A presentation copy of this classic children's story from J.M. Barrie to one of the primary inspirations for Peter Pan and the Lost Boys. Michael was the fourth of the five Lewellyn Davies boys first encountered and befriended by Barrie during his walks in Kensington Gardens (though Michael was born a few years subsequent to this first meeting). Barrie would meet the boys' mother Sylvia in 1898 and the two became close, especially after Barrie's divorce in 1909. Following the death of their father Arthur in 1907 and of Sylvia in 1910 Barrie would informally adopt the boys. Barrie would frequently acknowledge the debt of inspiration owed to the boys in creating the world of Peter Pan. Michael Llewellyn Davies died in a suspected drowning accident just short of his 21st birthday in 1921; he, along with his brother George (who also died in his 20s), would be referred to by their younger brother Nico as the boys who meant the most to Barrie. See also lots 126, 127 and 171. Provenance: By descent through the family of Jack Llewellyn Davies and thence to the present owner.

A very good autograph letter signed to â€˜Dear Mrs. Marshallâ€™, on his headed paper, from Brantwood, Coniston, dated 2nd March [18]73, 4 pp (single folded sheet), in his small tidy hand, with a typed transcript. â€˜This is the first mild day of March .. the air was infinitely sweet this afternoon by the shore - Snow all gone. Just before it fell, I took a walk to the top of the rocks on the west of your tarn .. I maintain this view from your crags to be the finest mountain panorama in the lakes .. I am going to Oxford for three weeks only, to give three lectures on Robin, Swallow and Chough as subjects of fine art .. Your carefully directed parcel of books came just when and where it ought ..â€™ A long, warm, chatty letter to a neighbour, showing his interest in and response to his natural environment, signed â€˜faithfully & gratefully yoursâ€™. The recipient, Mrs. [Mary] Marshall, nee Mary Spring Rice, was a maid of honour to Queen Victoria; her father was then Chancellor of the Exchequer. With this item is offered a framed watercolour drawing by Ruskin of a botanical specimen, signed indistinctly lower right, circa 7 ins x 5 ins, with label to rear inscribed â€˜Painted by John Ruskin for Nelly Oâ€™Brien when she was a child & was his pupil, & given by Margaret Oâ€™Brien to Edith Wilkinson Xmas 1925. After my death I wish it to be given to Elinor Oâ€™Brien.â€™ The Oâ€™Briens mentioned are from the Cahirmoyle family (of William Smith Oâ€™Brien). The ancestry is complicated, but Nelly Oâ€™Brien was a niece of Charlotte Grace Oâ€™Brien, daughter of WSOB. Margaret Oâ€™Brien was Nellyâ€™s half-sister. Mary Spring Rice (daughter of Baron Monteagle) married James Garth Marshall of Yorkshire. Together with 8 envelopes addressed by Ruskin to Hartnell, and an autograph letter signed to Hartnell from Joanna Severn ('[I] am glad … to tell you that after many months of anxiety about the poor master he is at last showing signs of betterness, for which I am infinitely thankful', with envelope) (1 folder) Qty: (Quantity) Note: A remarkable collection of newly discovered letters casting light on Ruskin's tormented later years and his relationship with an intriguing female acquaintance, whom he clearly held in high esteem, but about whom little remains known. Ada Hartnell was one of the 32 original members of the Guild of St George, the utopian social organisation Ruskin established in 1878 on the model of the guilds of medieval Venice. She is mentioned by Ruskin in Fors Clavigera as one of a select group of guild companions 'in whose future adherence and support I have entire trust'. During the time these letters were written she lived first at 79 Falmouth Road, London, and later at 6 Brighton Villas, Northumberland Park, Tottenham. Ruskin's mental stability suffered badly during his seventeen-year relationship with Rose La Touche, who died in 1875. In February 1878 he experienced a total collapse, followed by several further attacks between 1881 and 1889, after which he 'gradually retreated into silence, saying little, and writing few letters' (ODNB), living in seclusion at Brantwood under the care of his relation Joanna Severn. The earlier letters in the collection suggest that Ruskin frequently visited Hartnell in London. His letters proposing to meet can strike an importunate note, and the type of assignation proposed is in one instance unexpected: 'Would you like to come to the Pantomime at Drury lane to-morrrow with me. You would have to meet me at my good old servants' teashop, 29 Paddington St, Portland place - and I would take the greatest care of you and drive you home. Send me a line here' In letters evidently written in the aftermath of his crisis, Ruskin confides in Hartnell about the debilitating effects of his mental state, while demonstrating an urgent concern for Hartnell's own health and living arrangements, an intense dynamic encapsulated in one letter from Brantwood: 'I have had several very bad sleepless nights myself, lately - but the mental gloom causes them - it is not the consequence of them. That darkness over the whole world becomes more and more definite to me as one of judgement, and every voice [...] is of the night. I can only keep my strength by refusing to think, and going on with work that I still have pleasure in - and pleasing any body I can innocently please. But I've been freed to write something serious just now - in which your letter helps me so much - you will have it in a week [...] I am so very thankful your health is on the whole better [...] Shall I see if I can get better lodging for you near my museum at Sheffield - there's no smoke unless with strong southeast wind, and lovely country close by, being certainly as cheap as near London. Please think about this and write again' The later letters also contain much discussion of guild matters, with Ruskin musing on his own suitability to lead 'until they find somebody better', discussing the publication of Fors, indulging in a schoolmasterly harangue in which he dismisses Praeterita as 'mere gossip', and welcoming positive reports of a recent number of Proserpina; Joanna Severn finds frequent mention as someone evidently known to Hartnell and with an interest in her well-being.

R.' and 'R. 98', toned, sheet size 29 x 22.5 cm (11 3/8 x 8 7/8 ins), mounted (51.2 x 43.5 cm), with old framer's label Ryman & Co., Oxford, and manuscript title label from earlier mount mounted on verso QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: Paxford House, near Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire; RG and RB Williams, Ross on Wye, lot 1, 17th September 2020. John Ruskin lodged for a time almost opposite Merton Tower, and there is at least one other drawing by him of Merton Tower: 'Merton College and Magpie Lane, Oxford', drawn in 1838 (Ruskin Foundation, RF 967). Paxford House was in the ownership of the Odling family for 100 years. Its contents were sold after the death, in 2019, of Hilary Katharine Odling, widow of Thomas George Odling (1911-2002). There are two likely ways in which the drawing might have become part of the collection at Paxford. Firstly, Thomas's father, Doctor William Odling (1829-1921) was interested in art and was a prolific collector of old master prints. In 1868 he was appointed Fullerian Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Institute, a place where Ruskin gave many Friday Evening Discourses from the early 1860s to the mid 1870s. It is not unreasonable, therefore, to suppose that the paths of the two men may have crossed. Secondly, Thomas's grandfather was Thomas Case (1844-1925), an academic, philosopher, sportsman and author. He was Fellow of Brasenose College, Oxford, from 1868 to 1870, tutor at Balliol from 1870 to 1876, and subsequently on the staff of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He also became Waynflete Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy at Oxford and President of Corpus Christi College. He was particularly interested in architecture and was involved in various restoration projects in Oxford. Since Thomas Case and John Ruskin were in Oxford around the same time and held similar interests, it is quite likely that they would have met.
