Eales II, 355. - Wallace war ein britischer Naturforscher und einer der Mitbegründer der Selektiontheorie. Er unternahm zahlreiche Forschungsreisen, unter anderem nach Brasilien und Südostasien. Gemeinsam mit Charles Darwin veröffentlichte er 1858 unter anderem die Abhandlung "On the tendency of species to form varieties". - Fleckig, Ränder gebräunt, tls. mit leichten Randläsuren. Exemplare mit allen lithographischen Tafeln und den grünen Verlagseinbänden. Zoology. - 2 vols. With 20 plates and 7 partly folded plates. Green canvas with gilt stamped title and gilt stamped design (dusty, rubbed and bumped). - Rare first edition. - Wallace was a British naturalist and one of the co-founders of the theory of selection. He undertook numerous research trips, including to Brazil and Southeast Asia. Together with Charles Darwin he published the treatise "On the tendency of species to form varieties" in 1858. - Stained, margins browned, some with slight marginal wear.     South America.- Wallace (Alfred Russel) A Narrative of Travels on the Amazon and Rio Negro, first edition, linen-backed colour lithograph frontispiece, 8 linen-backed lithographs, lacking folding letterpress table of vocabulary and advertisements at end, ex-Manchester Subscription Library with occasional discreet ink-stamps, faint abrasion mark to title, occasional faint marginal finger-soiling, one or two marginal pencil marks, new endpapers, contemporary half-calf, a little rubbed, slight bumping to corners and extremities, 8vo, 1853. *** A scarce first edition of Wallace's earliest work, which made his reputation. This work is all the more remarkable given that the majority of Wallace's notes and drawings from this expedition were lost in a cargo fire whilst returning to England.
