      EXCEPTIONAL AND RARE WATERCOLORS Two 19th c. watercolor views, attributed to Joseph Shoemaker Russell (1795-1860), born in New Bedford, MA, (note: Nina Fletcher Little collected his watercolors of New Bedford and Philadelphia), the first view is of a long building with two separate doorways (possibly a Quaker meeting house), and two ladies in long skirts and bonnets, dated "1848" in lower right corner, some foxing, overall good, 7 1/4" x 10"; the second view is an outdoor scene of young gentlemen, in what appears to be a campus with connected buildings and a bell tower, 6 1/2" x 9 3/4"; both laid down on card stock.

      Joseph Shoemaker Russell (1795-1860) interior of the j.s. russell whale oil and lamp store, 55 chestnut st., philadelph Inscribed in pencil, "New Bedford Oil & Lamp Store No 55 Chestnut St kept & painted by Joseph Russell," watercolor and ink on paper. 7 1/2 in. x 9 in. PROVENANCE: Russell was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts but moved to Philadelphia in 1818. That year he opened this store for the sale of New Bedford Whale oil at the north east corner of Strawberry and Chestnut Streets. Russell's drawing of the exterior of the store was sold at Sotheby's in the "The Bertram K. and Nina Fletcher Little Collection, Part II," October 21, 1994, lot 670. It shows a trade sign with a whale above the door and a wagon painted "New Bedford Lamp Oil 55 Chestnut St."
