Oil on canvas, relined Holland, circa 1600 Circle of Pieter Cornelisz van Rijck (1567-ca.1637) - Dutch painter A kitchen maid at work Simple natural wood frame Overall dimensions, framed: 118.5 x 150 cm Provenance: Formerly collection Paul Delaroff, St. Petersburg (seal on the back, dated 1914) An impressive kitchen still life in the Dutch Golden Age tradition The present painting is the work of an artist active in the circle of Pieter Cornelisz van Rijck, and dates from around 1600. It depicts a maid at work in the kitchen. She holds a long knife, while she looks directly at the viewer. On the table are placed all kinds of poultry, a lamb with tied legs and kitchen vessels. A basket contains a variety of vegetables. The present painting stands in a tradition of kitchen pieces, which combine still life and genre painting. It was founded by the Antwerp painter Pieter Aertsen (1509-75). Although the genre lost its popularity in the 17th century, it was continued by a few painters, including Cornelis Delff and Pieter van Rijck in Delft. The back of the stretcher shows remnants of a seal of the collection Paul Delaroff, St. Petersburg, dated 1914. The canvas has been relined. The varnish is uneven and shows, and the paint surface is thin in places. The edges have been retouched. To the face of the maid are visible small discolored areas of retouching and a repaired tear. Inspection under UV light shows some lines of strengthening to the darker details of the still life and the figure, as well as scattered areas of retouching to the background. The wooden frame shows some chips. The overall dimensions, framed, are 118.5 x 150 cm. The stretcher measures 103.5 x 135 cm. Pieter Cornelisz van Rijck (1567 - ca. 1637) Pieter Cornelisz van Rijck was a painter active in the Dutch Golden Age. According to Van Mander, who met him in Haarlem, he was trained in drawing with Jacob Willemsz Delff. He went to Italy along with Huybrecht Jacobsz Grimani, and stayed there for 15 years. According to the RKD (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie), van Rijck lived in Venice between 1588 and 1602 and in Haarlem from 1602 to 1604. In 1605, he went back to Italy. From 1632 to 1637, van Rijck probably lived in Naples. The favorite subjects of the painter were kitchen pieces, portraits and market scenes. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
