The face of Piccolina Yakalina is reminiscent in form and style of other Ryden creations, such as Baby Bos. This entity of surrealist aesthetics is based on a conception of simple lines without hindering the expressiveness of the work. In the promotional video that the artist made for the launching of Piccolina Yakalina he commented about it "the Yakalina are spiritual entities that count as sisters mermaids, fairies and ghosts. Collectively, the 9 Yakalina form a mystical entity." Mark Ryden received a BFA in 1987 from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Ryden's work has become more prominent in the public domain thanks to so-called lowbrow art publications, such as Juxtapoz, in which his work appears regularly. In fact, Ryden has collaborated with other lowbrow artists such as Gary Baseman and Tim Biskup, as well as composers Stan Ridgway (Wall of Voodoo) and Pietra Wexstun, (the soundtrack to the CD "Blood - Miniature Paintings of Sorrow and Fear"). In November 2001, Ryden presented his first exhibition in New York at the Earl McGrath Gallery, which later moved to the Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana, California. His paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, including a career-spanning retrospective "Chamber of Wonders" at the Centro de Arte Contemporaneo de Malaga, as well as an earlier retrospective "Wondertoonel" at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle and Pasadena California Museum of Art. Ryden was commissioned to create the costume set and costumes for a production of Whipped Cream, presented by American Ballet Theatre with choreography by Alexei Ratmansky. Whipped Cream is based on Schlagobers, a two-act ballet with libretto and score by Richard Strauss that was first presented at the Vienna State Opera in 1924. Works created by Ryden for the ballet were exhibited in the Gallery Met located in the Metropolitan Opera House. Preserves premium packaging designed with illustrations by Mark Ryden. Measurements: 33 cm (height); 40 x 36 x 18 cm (box). In 1994 Ryden created his work "Santa Barbie", quickly becoming one of his most recognized paintings. Years later the collaboration with the Mattel company resulted in the artistic creation of two dolls and a series of accessories that were celebrated in an exhibition in which Mattel paid tribute to various icons of surrealism. Designed with Mark Ryden, this Barbie bee, reigns in her enchanted garden, dressed in luxurious bee "skin" and translucent wings. Ryden's distinctive vision of surrealism is rendered with the delicacy of the old masters and blurs the boundaries between high and low art. This creative collaboration brings to life the magical universe of Ryden who has always accorded a very special place to the bee in his work and in his personal mythology. Ryden sees in the bee the quintessential example of the interconnectedness of all life forms on the planet. For this collaboration, the Barbie doll has become the bee, gliding majestically in a lush, baroque tableau of nature. Mark Ryden received a BFA in 1987 from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Mark Ryden (b. 1963) YHWH Vinyl Figure Ed. 1373/2000. Numbered 1373. Very light scuffs around base and back of “head”. Approx. 16 in. H x 10 in. W x 2 in. D. Mark Ryden was born on January 20, 1963 in Medford, Oregon, but grew up in Southern California. He received a B.F.A. in 1987 from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Mark's paintings are intended to trigger a warped deja vu. His work recalls a parallel universe of 1950s Golden Books and the whimsy of Lewis Carroll. His cheery bunnies, rendered in the glowing hues of childrens books, are likely to be carving slabs of meat rather than frolicking in the forest. Rydens work mingles unique technique with images that create a world of strange and disturbing beauty. "At once intriguing and unsettling, baffling and enchanting, [Rydens] works... are subtle amalgams of many sources and influences as wide-ranging as Psychedelic and Vienna School artists Neon Park and Ernst Fuchs, to classical French formalists Ingres and David." Rick Gilbert-Panik Mark was part of a very creative family. His father, Keith, made his living painting, restoring, and customizing cars. Marks mother, Barbara, while dedicated her life to raising her 5 children, was always busy with a creative project and encouraged her children in the pursuit of art. Marks older brother KRK, an underground artist notorious in the counter culture, gave Mark an early introduction to art. Marks paintings are owned by collectors from Australia to Sweden. A few of his clients include Stephen King, Leonardo DiCaprio, Patrick Leonard, Ringo Starr, Danny Elfman, Kirk Hammett, Paul Leary, Chris Carter, Don Was, Kidada Jones, Bridget Fonda, Henry Selik and the famous anti-mogul Long Gone John. Currently, Mark is living in a magic house in Sierra Madre, California with his l wife Carolyn, his son Jasper, and daughter Rosie. You can find him late at night in his studio among his many trinkets, statues, skeletons, saints, and old toys that he collects for inspiration. Source: http://www.markryden.com

"Mark Ryden is an American painter who is part of the lowbrow movement also known as Pop Surrealism), in fact he has been called the godfather of Pop Surrealism by Interview Magazine. Also receiving good reviews in Artnet who named Ryden and his wife, the painter Marion Peck, as king and queen of Pop Surrealism as well as one of the most important artistic couples in Los Angeles. His aesthetic draws from a wide variety of sources: Ingres, David and other French classics. Abraham Lincoln is portrayed in many of his works. Ryden also finds inspiration in anything that smacks of mystery: old toys, anatomical models, stuffed animals, skeletons and religious imagery. Starring pop culture subjects with techniques reminiscent of the old masters, Mark Ryden has created a singular style that blurs the traditional boundaries between high and underground art. His work first gained attention in the 1990s when he ushered in a new genre of painting, pop surrealism, sweeping a multitude of followers in its wake. Ryden has moved beyond initial surrealist strategies by choosing a subject matter laden with cultural connotations.Ryden's vocabulary varies between the cryptic and the easily recognizable, treading a fine line between nostalgic cliché and disturbing archetype. Seduced by his infinitely detailed and meticulously glazed surfaces, the viewer is confronted with the juxtaposition of childlike innocence and the mysterious recesses of the soul. A subtle unease inhabits his paintings; the work is achingly beautiful as it hints at darker psychic things beneath the surface of cultural kitsch. In Ryden's world, cherubic girls rub shoulders with strange and mysterious figures. Ornately carved frames give the paintings a baroque exuberance that adds gravitas to their enigmatic subjects. Mark Ryden received a BFA in 1987 from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. His paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, including a career-spanning retrospective "Chamber of Wonders" at the Center for Contemporary Art in Malaga, as well as an earlier retrospective "Wondertoonel" at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle and Pasadena California Museum of Art. Ryden was recently commissioned to create the costume set and costumes for a new production of Whipped Cream, presented by American Ballet Theatre with choreography by Alexei Ratmansky. Whipped Cream is based on Schlagobers, a two-act ballet with libretto and score by Richard Strauss that was first performed at the Vienna State Opera in 1924.
