        Sophie Ryder

        Est: $4,000 - $6,000

(British, born 1963) Horse and Rider, 1995, edition 2/9, signed on proper right back hoof "Ryder 95" , patinated bronze, 29 x 32 x 14 in., with acrylic pedestal, 33-1/8 x 22-1/8 x 12-1/8 in. Horse and Rider is one of the few humans that Ryder has created that doesn't wear a mask. Most of Ryder's figures have minotaur or hare masks. “I add the objects to create a more interesting texture and to add an element of fun. Some of the objects are everyday things that have broken or that I found relevant to that year or my children's favourite toys (they weren't too happy about that). Some of the pieces are from other sculptures and I often feel like using them again. It's like I want to add graffiti to my work so that the surface has a story as well as the sculpture itself.” - Sophie Ryder Provenance: The Artist; Kristy Stubbs Gallery, Dallas, Texas (accompanied by artists's exhibition information); Collection of Jean and Jim Barrow

        Est: CHF16,000 - CHF22,000

SOPHIE RYDER (London 1963–lives and works in Cirencester) Crawling (Maquette). 1998. Bronze with green patina. With the incised signature, date and number on the inside of the left thigh: Ryder 98 1/9. 23.5 × 34 × 11 cm. Provenance: - Artist's studio. - Private collection Switzerland. "I sculpt characters and beings - the dogs, the hares, the minotaurs - are all characters beyond animal form. I'm not interested in making a replica. If you would put a real hare next to one of mine, you would see great differences." Sophie Ryder Looking at Sophie Ryder's animal-human hybrids, we are immediately struck by the close connection the artist establishes between mythology and human life, its emotions, and desires. The artist gradually transformed the violent, powerful Minotaur of Greek mythology into a loving protector. With the characterful anthropomorphic "Lady Hare", who stands for desire and fertility, Ryder soon created a worthy companion for the Minotaur. Of fundamental importance is that the free-form head of the Lady Hare, as with all the other heads of Ryder's fantasy creatures, functions merely as a mask. Her own body serves as the model for the female hare. Accordingly, it can be assumed that Ryder is in fact portraying himself. After a short time, Ryder, a passionate dog breeder, also created the "Dogman", which is closely related to the female hare. With her works, Sophie Ryder seeks to convey to the viewer a momentary human emotion in an everlasting form. Ryder's uniqueness lies in her ability to convey the variety of human emotions through body language alone, as the human face and the instinctive sensations that our faces can convey are masked. With her signature works, the artist attempts to capture almost every aspect of what is to be human: vulnerability, fatigue, hunger, happiness, jealousy, pain, love, fear, humour, and sexuality. Crawling on all fours, attentively facing each other and looking into a mirror, these bronze works from 1998-99, mysterious as well as familiar, invite the viewer to interact. - Privatsammlung Schweiz. "I sculpt characters and beings - the dogs, the hares, the minotaurs - are all characters beyond animal form. I'm not interested in making a replica. If you would put a real hare next to one of mine you would see great differences." ---------------

I'm not interested in making a replica." Sophie Ryder Sophie Ryder has created her own mythology, a world populated by a menagerie of hybrid hares, minotaurs, and dogs. Her earliest anthropomorphized figures were monumental constructions intended for outdoor settings and open spaces. Composed of intricately bent and twisted wire, with sawdust, plastic, found objects and metal, these sculptures jauntily occupy space within their natural setting. These hybrid figures with human bodies and animal heads are permitted a degree of freedom of expression, untethered by any societal expectations or pressures, allowing Ryder commentary on human emotions, relationships, and motivations. Significantly, Ryder has stated that the body of the Lady Hare, one of her most identifiable subjects, is modeled from her own. The sculpture offered here, the Lady Hare and Minotaur, is a figural group that Ryder has revisited in various configuration for decades.

        Est: £10,000 - £15,000

SOPHIE RYDER (BRITISH, B.1963) MINOTAUR, LADY HAREComposition busts, a pairEach 73 x 65cm (28½ x 25½ in.) including base (2)Born in England in 1963, Ryder studied Combined Arts at the Royal Academy of Arts where she obtained a diploma in painting. As Ryder began her career she was eager to test herself with as diverse an array of materials as possible, including plaster, bronze and galvanized wire, she was also keen to experiment with creating work of differing scales. When looking at her work, the strong link she has drawn between mythology and human life and emotions becomes instantly apparent, yet everything she creates is decisively human. She employs the figure of the hare to reinterpret the ancient Minotaur of Greek mythology, the hare's head is simply a mask for the human sitter who is in fact the artist herself. The intent of each of her works is to convey, in an everlasting form, a momentary human emotion.
