    white marble, on painted wood columns (4) CATALOGUE NOTE Ryley exhibited at the Royal Academy from his studio at 91 Dean Street, Soho, between 1833 and 1837 and specialised in portrait busts. In 1835, the date appearing on the present works, he exhibited no less than five male busts, identified in Graves (op.cit.). He also worked in bronze, producing a bust of Cardinal Newman, sold Christie's, 14 May 1987, lot 9. RELATED LITERATURE Gunnis vol.6, p.398

    E*** Ryley English, active 1833-1837 a pair of busts of a gentleman and lady both signed and dated: E.RYLEY.MOddILld.LONdON 1835 white marble, on painted wooden columns Male: 73 cm., 28 3/4 in. Female: 71 cm., 28 in. Columns: 118 cm., 46 1/2 in. In 1835 Ryley exhibited five marble busts at the Royal Academy. Although all of these were male sitters, it is possible that the present bust of a gentleman may be identifiable with either Ryley's bust of Daniel White Harvey, M.P., William Frend, or Dr. Bowring, M.P.
