      Nov. 06, 2016

      LAMBERT SACHS (American, 1818-1903)

      Est: $5,000 - $7,000

Portrait of a boy and his dog, 1863, oil on canvas, 38-3/4 x 52 in., signed and dated 'L. Sachs / 1863' to the right of the boy's knee, canvas prepared in Philadelphia (brand on verso), in a period frame (reduced in size) A painting of a similar (though inversed) composition by the artist is in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., accession no. 1955.11.2 Lambert Sachs was born in Mannheim, Germany, and trained there as an artist before emigrating to the United States in 1850. He exhibited three portraits at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1854 and was a resident of Philadelphia until 1855, when he left to work as a farmer and itinerant artist in Ocean County, New Jersey, 50 miles east of Philadelphia. In 1859 or 1860, city directories show that Sachs returned to Philadelphia where he again took up portrait painting and opened a photography studio. Apparently this was short-lived, as in 1864, for unknown reasons, the artist returned to Germany where he remained for the rest of his life. The present painting is likely one of the final works he produced in Philadelphia.

    • LAMBERT SACHS (American, 1818-1903) & PAUL (GOTTLIEB DANIEL) WEBER (German, 1813-1916) GEORGE WASHINGTON IN PRAYER AT VALLEY FORGE.
      Feb. 05, 2015

LAMBERT SACHS (American, 1818-1903) & PAUL (GOTTLIEB DANIEL) WEBER (German, 1813-1916) GEORGE WASHINGTON IN PRAYER AT VALLEY FORGE.

      Est: $70,000 - $80,000

Collaborative oil on panel created by Lambert Sachs and Paul Weber, capturing the moment when General Washington kneels in prayer, asking for the protection from his heavenly father for the success of the impending mission. A Quaker by the name of Mr. Potts observes the scene from behind the bushes. Inscribed on verso "Geo Washington in Prayer at Valley Forge by Lambert Sachs, landscape Paul Weber". This lot is accompanied by a hand colored lithograph by Peter Kramer after this Lambert Sachs painting, published by P. S. Duval & Co., Phila., 1854. Painting is housed in a modern gilt wood frame. Lithograph is housed in 19th century gilt frame. The historical importance of this painting cannot be underestimated. To find the original painting by two esteemed artists of their time and having been used as the basis for a rare and desirable historical lithograph is an important discovery. The colored engraving puts in print to the American public a side of Washington that was unknown and showed the human side of Washington during his hardest times. The print is a fine rendition of Weber and Sachs oil painting. Paul Weber as a landscape painter was well renowned and executed many large panoramic views (ref. a 54î x 70î ìIn the Catskillsî painting sold at Christieís in 2000) and Lambert Sachs concentrated on historical studies (ref. Washington and Lafayette in the Battle of Monmouth residing in a private collection in Early, Iowa. ) The collaboration of these two fine artists indicates the importance that both felt to capture the scene properly. Note: in the Art Inventories of the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SIRIS) a painting with the same title, same artists but of a slightly different size is listed as being sold at Sotheby Parke Bernet New York, NY sale No. 3834 lot 355 in 1976 Control No. IAP 61516324. SIZE: Painting: 36" x 32". Overall: 46" x 42". Lithograph: 24-1/2" x 19". Overall: 28-1/2" x 23". PROVENANCE: Lithograph collection of Mr. & Mrs. Myer P. Potamkin.
