Provenance: Charleston Renaissance Gallery, Charleston, South Carolina, 2011; Private Collection. The firm of E. Sachse was one of the earliest lithographers to utilize the medium of multiple-stone color lithography and is one of the most important lithographers working in America during the nineteenth-century. Reps dates the print 1854, although the copyright date on this impression clearly states 1851 which puts it in line with the date of the other Sachse view of Richmond “View of Richmond: From the Church Hill.”

          Featured in this lot is this Edward Sachse (1804-1873) "Point Lookout Md," Civil War era color-lithograph. The map presents a general scheme (not to scale) of Hammond Genl. Hospital and U.S. Genl. Depot for Prisoners of War. Edward Sachse (1804-1873) was an artist and lithographer whose business, E. Sachse & Co. in Baltimore, Maryland, published prints of regional sights and cities; he also produced a series of views of American Civil War era military encampments and hospitals in Baltimore and Washington, DC. The condition of this framed lithograph is good, with the frame showing wear and slight damage. The measurements of this framed lithograph are 25 1/4" x 34 1/2" and the visible art measures 21 1/2" x 30 1/2".

Panoramic map depicting the Lawn of the original grounds of the University of Virginia, including the Annex to the Rotunda (constructed 1851-54, destroyed by fire in 1895), and the Anatomical Theater (completed in 1828, partially destroyed by fire in 1886, restored with modifications in 1888). Coleman (1827-1863) and Mary Ambler Marshall (daughter of James K. Marshall and granddaughter of John Marshall (1755-1835)). Lewis M. Coleman Jr. was also related to the family of Henry Dearborn by his marriage to Julia Wingate Boyd, daughter of Annette Maria Dearborn Boyd, who was the daughter of Greenleaf Dearborn (1786-1846) and great granddaughter of Gen. Henry Dearborn (1751-1829) on her mother's side. Biography: "Coleman, Lewis Minor, born in Hanover County, Virginia, February 3, 1827; graduated with high honors at the University of Virginia, in 1846, and became principal of the Hanover Academy; in 1859, upon the resignation of Dr. Harrison from the chair of ancient languages in the University of Virginia, Mr. Coleman, who had been a pupil of Dr. Harrison, was elected professor of Latin, and relinquished his position in the Hanover Academy to accept the same; he served in that capacity but for two years, for in 1861, at the outbreak of the civil war, he joined the ranks of the Confederate army, in which he enlisted as captain of an artillery company which he recruited; he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel of artillery in 1862; at the battle of Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862, he was severely wounded, and after three months died from his injury, March 21, 1863".
