            Jun. 06, 2024

            AEGIDIUS SADELER 1570 - 1625 - TWELVE MONTHS CYCLE

            Est: -

Sadeler dedicated the cycle of twelve months according to Pietro Stevens to Baron Ferdiannd Hoffmann, chief councillor and president of the court chamber of Rudolf II. The cycle is exceptional in that it follows the usual depictions of the activities and entertainments of the months, but also bears Sadeler's artistic license. The cycle also traces his connection to Prague, which appears in individual views of the landscape, often highly stylized. For example, the Chapel of Corpus Christi (now demolished) and the Church of St. Apollinaris are interesting in the allegory of December. Framed under anti-reflective glass with UV filter. Technique: copper engraving, paper, Signed: unsigned

            Est: €1,500 - €2,200

Impressive elaborate large Portrait of Emperor Matthias, bust to right on a pedestal, surrounded by a garland containing ten medallions with portraits of Emperors, including Rudolph II and Maximillian II. The Allegorical Portrait of the Hapsburg Emperor Matthias is a large, extravagant composition, full of political iconography and playful illusionism. The naturalistic likeness of Matthias is set upon a fictive sculpted bust with draped shoulders and pedestal. The composition is embedded with personifications, beginning with two figures representing Wisdom and Fortitude who carry flags with the emperor's emblems at the upper corners. At top center, cherubs carry the imperial crown down from heaven, while the Three Graces shower flowers and gold upon the emperor. At the sides, figures of Mercury and Minerva, posed like the famed statues of the Dioscuri in Rome, tame Pegasus (a common symbol of Virtue) and spear the dragon of Religious Heresy. Below, the diverse subjects of the empire and its Turkish foes kneel in homage.

Date: c. 1600 Description: Engraving by Sadeler, Egidius (1570 Antwerp - Prague 1629) and Sadeler, Marcus Christoph (before 1614 Munich - Prague 1660) after Titian (1477 Pieve di Cadore - Venice 1576). Marcus Salvius Otho (32-69 AD) was one of the four Roman emperors of the four-emperor year 69. On the copper engraving it is particularly striking that his right arm is bare, but his left arm is in 17th century armour. It is an interesting portrait of an ancient personage who, however, seems to have been transported to the 17th century by the armour.
