      Est: £1,500 - £2,000

Thomas Sadler/General Robert Echlin/half length portrait/inscribed on the reverse Lt Gen R Echlin married widow of Wm Faussett Esq daughter of John Bryan Esq/oil on canvas, 68.5cm x 51cm (27'' x 20'')/in a carved and gilded frame/Note: Robert Echlin 3rd son of Robert Echlin of Ardquin, County Down, Ireland (politician - soldier) served as Captain in Colonel John Cunningham's Foot in 1689, repulsed the attack by the Duke of Berwick on the Isle of Inch; became Lt Colonel of the Inniskillen Regiment at the foundation of the Regiment by Sir Albert Conyngham. In 1690 Robert Echlin commanded part of the Regiment at the Battle of the Boyne at which he distinguished himself by saving General Ginkel's cavalry from fierce attack by James VII's cavalry. Conyingham was captured and killed , Echlin petitioned to be given the Regiment, in 1692 became full Colonel and by 1707 was Lt General. The Regiment was sent to Scotland at the time of Union. At about this time Echlin's allegiance was transferred to the Jacobite cause. He was relinquished of his command which was handed by the Duke of Marlborough to the Earl of Stair. Echlin received no payment for the Regiment (his support of the Duke of Ormond and opposition of Churchill and his Tory leanings all worked against him). He is believed to have commanded a Regiment of horses under the Earl of Seaford and the Marquis of Huntley in the taking of Inverness. He possibly faced his old Regiment at the battle of Sheriffmuir on 13th November 1715 which marked the end of the rebellion. Echlin's basket hilt sword and the sword of the Earl of Stair are placed on opposing walls at Earlshall Castle. Echlin then faded from the historical records, it is thought he fled to France and possibly served in Louis XV's army
