BLICK AUF EINE FANTASTISCHE PALASTARCHITEKTUR MIT FIGUREN Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 67 x 82 cm. In vergoldetem Prunkrahmen. • JACOBUS FERDINANDUS SAEY (1658-1726) / JACOB BALTHASAR PEETERS (?)
        Feb. 16, 2021

JACOBUS FERDINANDUS SAEY (1658-1726) / JACOB BALTHASAR PEETERS (?)

        Est: €3,000 - €4,000

Elegant company by a Renaissance palace. Canvas. Lined. Provenance: Vienna, Dorotheum, 13.10.2010, lot 551; 25.04.2017, lot 380 Jacobus Ferdinand Saey is a talented architectural painter. In the wake of the Southern Netherlands church interior painters, he uses the perspective to paint impressive, imaginary Renaissance palaces. Besides the illusion of space and depth, he also paints surface textures very faithfully. The numerous red marble columns in his palaces are a good example of this. He was born in Antwerp in 1672, where he would also become an apprentice to church interior painter Wilhem Schubert van Ehrenberg (1630-1687). In 1694 he moves to Vienna, where he will spend all his life amidst the grandiose city palaces. Previously, the staffage figures were attributed to Jacob Balthasar Peeters (1665-after 1720). Through the layers of paint of their clothing we see the architectural lines shining through, which indicates that the figures were indeed added later. The attribution to Jacob Balthasar Peeters goes back to some paintings signed by Jacob Balthasar Peeters, the background of which is very similar to that of Jacob Ferdinan Saey. Such an 'I.B.P' monogrammed work was sold at Christie's in London on 06.11.2011 (canvas, 58.4 x 81.9 cm, lot 167, RKDimages database 244955). Another, 'J.B. Peeters' signed canvas was sold at Galerie Fischer (66 x 33 cm, Lucerne, 11.11.2009, lot 1035, see RKDimages database 199286). This indicates a possible partnership between the two artists. On the other hand, it is difficult to reconcile how the two artists bridged the distance between Vienna and Antwerp. There are no sources that situate Jacob Balthasar Peeters in Vienna. In addition, many of Saey's paintings are still located in the Vienna area, which suggests that they never passed through Antwerp after he put the finishing touches to the architectural background. Further research should clarify the relationship between the two artists. Description FR Compagnie galante devant un palais Renaissance. Toile.

THE PROPERTY OF JOHNNY VAN HAEFTEN LTD. A CLASSICAL PORTICO WITH AN ELEGANT COMPANY GATHERED BY A FOUNTAIN measurements note 36 3/4 by 27 7/8 in.; 93.3 by 73.3 cm. signed and dated lower center Saeys 1694 oil on canvas PROVENANCE Anonymous sale, New York, Christie's, June 7, 2002, lot 69, to Johnny van Haeften Ltd. NOTE Saeys' training with the Antwerp-based painter of architectural views, Wilhelm von Ehrenberg, greatly influenced Saeys' choice of subject matter. Here, the monumental portico, before which an elegant company has gathered is a superb example of the master's fanciful architectural renderings. The sharp light cast on the building and the way in which the pale sky sets off the composition are particularly striking elements that contribute to the artist's success in suggesting scale and volume. The inclusion of elements such as the peacock and page boy add a playful dimension to the painting. The picture is dated 1694, a decade after Saeys moved to Vienna, and the same year as his wedding to Maria van Risman.
