Safonkin 97’ to the lower right; once again signed, dated ‘Viktor Safonkin 97’ and titled ‘Protector of Love & Hate’ in Cyrillic with black permanent marker on the reverse The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by the gallery Jakubská in Prague on October 22, 1997 Dimensions: 55.5 x 55.5 cm Provenance: Gallery Jakubska, Prague; Private collection, Germany Viktor Safonkin’s paintings are inspired by the works of past surrealist artists such as Hieronymus Bosch, Arnold Böcklin, Zdzis?aw Beksi?ski, Ernst Fuchs, Salvador Dalí, and HR Giger. Safonkin combines this ‘psychedelic experience of gothic horror’ with sources of music, as well as with his own experiences and currents of subconscious. Viktor Safonkin (b. 1967) Born in Saransk, Russia, Viktor Safonkin’s work is self-described as ‘European Surrealism’ resp. ‘Classic European Surrealism & Symbolism’. Influenced by the great surrealist and symbolist painters of the past, Safonkin creates dynamic and powerful paintings that discreetly hold up a mirror to the viewer, pushing him for confrontation. In addition to numerous international exhibitions, Safonkin exhibited his works at the European Parliament in Brussels. The artist lives and works in Prague, where he operates his own gallery.
