Lyndi Sales Art for Sale and Sold Prices

b. 1973 -

(b.1973) Lyndi Sales is an artist based in Cape Town, South Africa. For the past couple of years, she has been working on a series of installations and artworks that seek to investigate the circumstances surrounding the controversial Helderberg plane crash. These constructions, made of intricately cut, pinned paper and rubber often shed light on the fragile nature of our existence, temporality and how chance plays a role in our lives.

She has held solo shows internationally at Galerie Maria Lund in Paris and Toomey Tourell in San Francisco. And locally in South Africa at the Goodman Gallery, Bell-Roberts Contemporary, Joao Ferreria and Gallery Momo galleries. She has participated in group shows in South Africa, USA, Austria, London, Holland and Denmark. Her works can be found in major collections in South Africa as well as collections in the USA and Europe.

She has taught as a visiting lecturer at Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town and University of Stellenbosch. Sales received both her BFA (1995) and MFA (2000) from University of Cape Town, both with distinction. Sales was a merit award winner in the ABSA Atelier. She was a recipient of the Vermont Studio Center grant and participated in residencies at the Vermont studio center as well as the Frans Masereel Center in Belgium.

In her series of works “In Transit” (2009), Lyndi Sales cuts her own organic diagrams into banknotes, life jackets, lottery tickets and official documentation about the infamous Helderberg disaster – an event that is still controversial because of the uncertainty surrounding the role of the apartheid government in the crash. Sales not only references a specific ill-fated journey, but also the transitions in South Africa – from the known, but undesirable, towards an as-yet undetermined future.”
