Sample was particularly known for his New England subject matter, especially those involving winter skiing in Vermont. SIZE: Sight is approx. 15 1/2" x 20 1/2". Overall 26 1/2" w x 32" h. Paul Starrett Sample (1896 - 1974) litho "The Slope Near the Bridge" , Signed , measures 8 3/4 x 12 7/8 , w/frame 16 x 19.5 inches Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Paul Sample established his reputation as a Regionalist landscape, figure and genre painter, particularly of New England subject matter. He was raised in the Midwest and attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, where reportedly he slept through art appreciation courses because he was much more interested in sports and music. He served in World War I in the Navy, and returned to graduate from Dartmouth. Shortly afterwards, he got tuberculosis, which led him to art because it was a more sedentary activity than his previous pursuits.In 1925, he moved to California and enrolled at the Otis Art Institute where his teacher was Jonas Lie, and he took private lessons from Stanton MacDonald-Wright and Frank Tolles Chamberlin. By 1926, he was a faculty member at the University of Southern California, where he then chaired the art department.

PAUL STARRETT SAMPLE Another Day. Oil on canvas, 1961. 517x613 mm; 20x24 inches. Signed, titled and inscribed with the artist's address in ink, verso. With the artist's original frame. Provenance: The University of Southern California, Los Angeles, with the label; Frank Leonard Gallery, Los Angeles, with the label; Estate of Evelyne Z. Daitz, New York. Sample (1896-1974) was an American artist who portrayed life in New England in the mid-20th century with a style that showed elements of Social Realism and Regionalism. Born in Louisville, he studied architecture at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and graduated in 1921 after a year in the Naval Reserve during World War I. Sample studied drawing and painting under Jonas Lie at Saranac Lake, New York, and studied at the Art Students League of Los Angeles and the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. In 1926 Sample joined the faculty of the University of Southern California in the school of architecture, where he remained until 1938. In 1938, he returned to New Hampshire to become the artist in residence at Dartmouth College, a position which he held until 1962. In addition to his social and regional paintings, Sample produced artwork for various magazines during World War II.

Paul Starrett Sample NA (1896-1974, Hanover, NH) "Fishing Boats," 1930 Oil on canvas Signed and dated lower right: Paul Starrett Sample; titled on the frame plaque 24" H x 30" W Notes: Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Paul Starrett Sample is remembered today as an artist with connections both to California and the Midwest. After serving in the Navy during World War II, Sample moved to California and enrolled at the Otis Art Institute and studied privately with Stanton Macdonald-Wright. By 1926, he became a faculty member at the University of Southern California and eventually the chair of the art department. The stability afforded to him by his position at USC enabled Sample to travel frequently and continue painting in his free time. The boats depicted in this Monterey, California scene are known as "double enders." Built in the 1920's and used primarily for salmon trolling, they featured a pointed bow and stern, making them very friendly in heavy following seas. In 1938, Sample moved to New England and became an artist-in-residence at Dartmouth College. Several his works were published as illustrations by highly regarded magazines during his career, and he was heavily exhibited throughout his lifetime. Sample died at his home in Vermont in 1974.

Paul Starrett Sample (New Hampshire, California, Vermont, 1896 - 1974) winter landscape with figures watercolor. Signed in lower portion of watercolor. Image size: 10.5 x 14 inches. From 1926 to 1938, Sample was on the art faculty of the University of Southern California. In 1938 he was appointed artist-in-residence at Dartmouth College, and he remained there until his retirement in 1962. In the early 1940's, Sample was recognized by Life magazine as one of the foremost painters in America, and his work was profiled in Art News, Esquire, Country Gentleman, and American Artist. Sample worked in a regionalist style, with life in rural New England, especially Vermont, dominating his oeuvre. During his career, Sample exhibited with Feragil Galleries and then Associated American Artists and Vose Galleries in Boston. He also exhibited frequently at the National Academy, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Carnegie Institute, and the Worcester Museum. He had many other successful solo and group shows during his long career.
