*PETER SAMUELSON (1912-1996) *PETER SAMUELSON (1912-1996) A four-fold double-sided wooden screen with applied card panels, hand-decorated with various erotic scenes signed and dated 'Peter '94' (mirrored), mixed media each panel 137 x 39cm overall 137 x 158cm Peter Samuelson appears in this screen as an old dog, holding a paintbrush and standing next to his signature. The signature is in 'mirror-writing', a trademark of Samuelson's, who liked to confuse potential collectors with his unusual method of signing. Samuelson is not the only autobiographical element in the screen, his daughter dances with her husband on the first panel and their pet cat is chased by birds. Even the buyer's spaniel 'Rosie' is present, transformed into a half-dog and half-human sultry nude, and the local farmer is shown in the banner at the top. The screen has a fantastical and bizarre quality that reflects Samuelson's approach to art, as he actively tried to stay separate from the art world and avoided dealers, yet his playful and often erotic works captured the attention of friends and admirers. Samuelson was educated at Eton, but aged fifteen he asked to leave school. Instead, he spent several seasons with the Ballets Russes de Monte-Carlo, sketching the dancers and improving his ability to capture movement, Samuelson wrote that ‘movement in the fingers comes from my own feeling for dance’. He then trained at the New York School of Fine Art in Paris, before moving to Holland to work as an illustrator for the Dutch Radio Times. Included in the following lots are several of his drawings from a series called 'Musical Fantasies', in his own words they are ‘always done under the immediate influence from the radio at speed, almost unconsciously, they are unashamed in their iconoclasm, with surrealistic elements unchecked.’ In 2006, Samuelson’s work was exhibited at the Brewhouse Gallery, Eton College. *Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.

A GROUP OF WORKS BY PETER SAMUELSON (LOTS 39-46) PETER SAMUELSON (1912-1996) Perry Court oil on board, unframed signed and dated 'PETER SAMUELSON 38.' (on the reverse) 20 1/2 x 28 in. (52 x 71.2 cm.) The White Heart Pub painted verso.  Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner.  Perry Court, nestled in the valley dominated by the old Roman road to London, with the Nailbourne stream nearby, which curiously flooded once every seven years, was Peter Samuelson's childhood home which he loved, hating to leave it for boarding school and eventually Eton, from which he all but ran away. He ended up in the south of France, where he joined Diaghilev's Ballet Russe which is where he learnt to draw; quickly and fluidly. He was a natural draftsman. He returned to Kent, where he lived with his wife Oona, who eventually reported him to the police for homosexuality, and subsequently lived in a large house in Earls Court which he filled with lodgers whose portraits he famously painted. "Still Life & Fantasy" are works done in response to individual pieces of music which he heard in rehearsal while drawing some of the most distinguished musicians at the Dutch Radio Orchestra - was a special exhibition in 1996 at Eton College's Brewhouse Gallery where some of these works featured, and which show his highly individualistic style and imagination (including mirror-writing and his pseudonym signature "Pierre").  The famous White Heart, just inside the ancient city walls of Canterbury is almost the same as in 1938 when this picture was painted, but the tension in Samuelson's rendition - echoing the tension of his own changing relationships - in a world about to change significantly, is less apparent today.  Lots 39-46 are beautiful examples of the amazing fluidity, with which Samuelson captures the essence of his subjects. Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.

PETER SAMUELSON (1912-1996) Ali Standing oil on board 25 3/4 x 16 3/4 in. (65.4 x 42.3 cm.) Provenance:  with Adonis Art, London, where purchased by the present owner.   Artist's Resale Right may apply on this lot. Peter Samuelson came from an affluent family, as the son of a rich hotelier. He went to Eton where his talent for painting was highly encouraged. He served as a soldier in World War II, after which he settled in London where he lived in large 19th century houses, which he often filled with lodgers. With a regular income, he did not need to work and painted for himself and friends. Ali Standing is painted in the rooms Upper Phillimore Gardens, where the artist lived in 1959. It has been suggested that the sitter is probably an immigrant from the Windrush Generation, who was then a lodger with Samuelson.
