Important Gothic Revival Stained Glass, E. Sanborn

        Est: $1,500 - $3,000

Earl Edward Sanborn (American (New Hampshire/ Massachusetts), 1890-1937). "Magi", painted and stained glass, signed to glass on lower right quadrant "By Earl Sanborn" (loss to paint beside 'Earl' likely once listed the name 'Edward'). A large Gothic Revival stained and painted glass roundel with elaborate lead fretwork and depicting the three Magi or wise men from the Biblical Creation Story, each man crowned and standing at full length holding his traditionally attributed offering, with two younger figures to background at left and right, the roundel encased in ebonized wood square frame. Overall approximately 40" square. Glass roundel approximate diameter 34". Provenance: acquired by the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia in a private sale in the Boston area, purportedly from the Private Collection of Paul McCobb, on March 11, 2000. Note: Sanborn is known best for his stained glass works installed at the Washington National Cathedral and the Bapst Library and Burns LIbrary of Boston College, both enormous projects bearing hundreds of biblical figures created in Gothic Medieval style in various scenes. While some watercolor and pastel works by the artist have been encountered on the auction market, another example of the artist's stained glass being sold at auction has not been found.
