      Est: €1,500 - €1,600

FERNANDO SANCHEZ CALDERÓN (Valladolid, 1951-2016). "Block on vertical upholstery". 1990. Mixed media on canvas. Signed in the lower margin. Titled and dated on the back. Measurements: 225 x 100 cm . In the nineties, Fernando Sánchez Calderón's painting is resolved in an expressive abstraction of energetic brushstroke and studied composition, which is exemplified in the painting shown here. The vivid chromaticism is indebted to the work of Motherwell and Matisse, artists whom the Valladolid-born artist admires. Geometry is not subsumed to a strict rigour but flows in free-floating bands. He trained as an artist at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he graduated, and later obtained a doctorate from the University of Salamanca, where he worked as a lecturer in the Faculty of Fine Arts. Between 1970 and 1975 he received a grant from the Spanish Institute of Emigration and in 1982 he obtained a grant for Research into New Expressive Forms from the Ministry of Culture. His first creations were figurative, and his work became known in the mid-seventies after he was selected to take part in the Sâo Paulo Biennial in 1977. In the eighties his painting moved towards abstraction and was influenced, in the early years of the decade, by abstract expressionism. He held his first individual exhibition in 1974 at the Stadium Gallery in Valladolid, and subsequently exhibited in Segovia, Almagro, Madrid, Santander, and many others. He has taken part in important group exhibitions, among which the following are worth mentioning: Pintura española contemporánea (1974) at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon (Portugal), III Bienal Internacional del Cairo (1988) in Egypt and XIII Salón de los 16 (1993) at the Palacio de Velázquez in Madrid's Parque del Retiro.
