            Est: €250 - €300

Watercolour, 23,5 x 32,7 cm, laid paper, unsigned (laid down on paper support). - A beautiful rendering of the ruins of Kirkstall Abbey, a very popular touristic site during the 18th c. and the early Romantic era. Attributed on verso to the great British watercolour draftsman Paul Sandby (1731-1809). As one of the leading British artists of his time, he became one of the founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768. Sandby made extensive journeys around Britain and Ireland, sketching scenery and ancient monuments. He was described in his obituaries as "the father of modern landscape painting in watercolors". Though the rendering of the present drawing lacks the soft and artistic refinement one often finds in Sandby's watercolours, its general mood and subject matter is clearly inspired by the artist.

Paul Sandby RA. (British, 1731-1809) - Eton College from the river Thames

            Est: £10,000 - £15,000

Pencil, pen and black and grey ink and watercolour on laid paper (on two sheets of paper, joined far left) 27 x 61cm (10 5/8 x 24in.) Provenance: A Private UK Collection With the exception of 1764, Sandby exhibited topographical views such as the present work at the Society of Artists from 1763 until 1768, and later at the Royal Academy in 1774, 1775, 1776 and 1801. He subsequently went on to produce aquatints and sets of outline etchings, which were issued in 1777, 1780 and 1782, with the intention of making the views available to collectors, as well as serving as teaching aids for his pupils. An album of drawings in the Staatliche Museen, Greiz, contains some similar preparatory studies. A comparable pen and wash drawing to the present lot is housed in the Royal Collection (RCIN 914617). Here, the artist has chosen to depict the North side of Windsor Castle, as seen from Eton playing fields with the riverbank in the foreground. Set amongst several figures, horses, cattle and boats with men unloading their cargo, this drawing, together with a further views also housed in the Royal Collection, were used by Sandby for his series of aquatints, published in 1777, of Windsor from Eton (see also for example, British Museum 1904, 0819.757). Although no known aquatint of the present lot is known, it seems likely that the drawing may have been executed around the same time as the other Windsor views. Sandby did not often sign and date his works, as with the present example. His brother the architect and draughtsman Thomas Sandby (1721-1798) was employed as Deputy Ranger of Windsor Great Park under William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland. As a result Paul Sandby came into contact with members of the royal household, a number of whom became his pupils and he took up the role of artist in residence to the Duke of Cumberland's aide, the 1st Earl of Harcourt.
