λ EDWINA SANDYS (BRITISH B. 1938)ROMEO REVISITED Lithograph printed in coloursSigned in pencil, titled and numbered 166/450 Image: 46 x 62cm (18 x 24¼ in.)Edwina Sandys MBE, the granddaughter of Winston Churchill, is renowned for her politically engaged œuvre, especially public sculptures. Her work can be found at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Museum, the Windsor Sculpture Park, and Westminster College, Missouri. This limited-edition print is an homage to Sandys' grandfather - it makes visual reference to Churchill's 1926 painting Bottlescape. His favourite champagne, Pol Roger, and cognac, Hine, rest on the table, while books relating to cigar manufacturers line the shelves. To the right hangs a rendering of Hans Wild's 1947 photograph of Churchill at Chartwell. His cigar is conspicuously absent, however, and the box of his beloved Romeo y Julieta in the foreground points to his enduring legacy. Romeo Revisited speaks to the power of painting to immortalise people and personae: Churchill is subsumed into this still life, as if preserved in amber.

          Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Edwina Sandys English, b. 1938 Christa, 1975 Resin with bronze patina on a lucite cross. Conceived as an edition of six, only three casts were made. This is 1/6. 41 x 34 3/4 x 7 1/2 inches (104.14 x 88.26 x 19.05 cm) figure, 54 x 40 inches (137.16 x 101.6 cm) lucite Provenance: Ed Schuman, NY The Artist Private collection, NY Exhibited: Livingston-Learmonth Gallery, NY, Edwina Sandys, 1975 First shown in London in 1975, Christa attracted widespread attention when she was displayed adjacent to the main altar of Manhattan's Cathedral of St. John the Divine during Holy Week in 1984. Her exhibition in this liturgical context evoked polar reactions; proponents lauded the work's gender-inclusive interpretation of Christ, while opponents declaimed it as theologically reprehensible. Protests forced Christa's removal from the cathedral after a mere eleven days, yet the work has since been featured at major galleries, museums and churches throughout North America and Europe. Christa is oft-recognized as the first representation of a female Christ on a crucifix; as perhaps the most significant work in Sandys' oeuvre, and as a milestone in the 1970s feminist art canon. C
