      Carel Van Savoy (Antwerp, 1619-Amsterdam, 1665). Portrait of a lady. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1657. Provenance: Collection A. Troubnikoff, Paris. (according to the Witt Library). Auction February 18, 1914, lot 99 (according to the RKD). Fontaneda Collection, Spain, of whom the father of the current owner 20 years ago. Bonhams, "Old Master Paintings". Lot 61. London, July 4, 2018. Relined. 104 x 89 cm. Flemish painter, draftsman and printmaker who was active in Antwerp and Amsterdam. He is known primarily for his history paintings and portraits, but he also painted allegories and genre scenes. He was enrolled in the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp as a pupil of the history and portrait painter Jan Cossiers in 1634-35. He traveled to Italy where he remained in Rome from 1643 to 1645. During his period of activity in Antwerp, van Savoyen followed the style of his teacher Jan Cossiers and of the important portraitist Gonzales Coques. In Amsterdam, his work was influenced by local artists such as Rembrandt and Gerard de Lairesse. His portrait drawing of Frans Koerten was engraved by Theodor Matham. Carel van Savoyen's works can be found in the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Darmstadt, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, the Greek Orthodox chapel in Leipzig, and in the former Catholic Church of Zaandam.

      (Anversa, 1619 - Amsterdam, 1665) Satiri e ninfa Olio su tavola, cm 49X39 Registrato nel 1634-1635 alla Corporazione di San Luca di Anversa come allievo di Jan Cossiers, Savoyen si trasferì a Roma dove rimase dal 1643 al 1645 e fu nuovamente a Amsterdam nel 1649. La sua attività lo vede produrre pale da altare e tele a soggetto religioso per conto delle ricche famiglie cattoliche dei paesi bassi, ma il catalogo conta altresì eleganti composizioni mitologiche. Celebre in tal senso fu il Venere e Adone che divenne tema del poeta olandese Jan Vos.
