The first map of England and Wales published in England. This is the second state with gradations of latitude and longitude in inner border. Most of the known examples have original coloring, the engraving being the work of Augustine Ryther, the most accomplished of the three English engravers used by Saxton. Geographically the map is a very significant advance on all previous maps, all the place names being shown in English and the coordinates improved; the basic outline was later used by Mercator, Speed, Blaeu, Jansson, and many other cartographers for nearly two hundred years. (Chubb I:1; Shirley, Early Printed Maps of the British Isles 128).
