        • Judith Schaechter (American, b. 1961) Dreams of Cheese
          May. 17, 2023

Judith Schaechter (American, b. 1961) Dreams of Cheese

          Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Judith Schaechter (American, b. 1961) Dreams of Cheese Stained glass in lightbox. overall dimensions: height: 25 1/2 in. (64.8cm) width: 22 1/2 in. (57.2cm) depth: 6 1/4 in. (15.9cm) Provenance Snyderman Gallery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Private Collection, Pennsylvania (acquired directly from the above in February 2002). Exhibition Stained and Scattered: Glass Works by Judith Schaechter and Jack Wax, Visual Arts Center of Richmond, Virginia, closed May 21, 2006. Note Philadelphia-based artist, Judith Schaechter uses traditional stained glass techniques, drawing on centuries of architectural and religious history, to create something very contemporary. Her work often addresses difficult or uncomfortable subjects, made beautiful and transcendent by the medium of glass itself and her choice of lush colors and intricate patterns. Schaechter has described her work as follows: “Medieval windows sought to confer inspiration and enlightenment to those who would see it. Beholding a stained glass window can enable, encourage, and literally enact the process of being filled with light. It sounds like some kind of preternatural phenomenon, but it’s a physical fact. While one is busy identifying and empathizing with the image, one also physically experiences the warming, filling sensations of light. It’s so persuasive not because the pictures are convincing narratives but because the colors are overwhelming and the light is sublime…it’s coming from inside you, it’s part of you.” [Judith Schaechter, Artist Statement, www.judithschaechter.com] To request a condition report, or for any additional information, please email Adrianne Wolkenberg at awolkenberg@freemansauction.com.

Judith Schaechter (American, 1961-) Stained Glass

          Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Judith Schaechter (American, 1961-) Title: Saint Violentine. Stained glass window mounted on a stenciled paint decorated wooden box frame with original interior lighting. Signed on the stained glass lower right; My Valentine by J.S. 2-14-61 AM 2-14-91, I miss you Jim C. with a heart symbol. Leaded glass panel measures 16.5 inches high, 17.3 inches wide. The Lightbox measures 19 inches high, 19.7 inches wide, 6 inches deep. In good condition. The below information was provided by the artist 042, Saint Violentine”, 17” x 17”, 1991 Exhibition history: "Indiscreet Objects of Desire”, Nexus Gallery, 1991. Solo exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, PA., 1995 Reproduced as the cover art for: "Dropped”, Mindfunk, Megaforce Records, 1993 (cd cover) Appears in: "Extra Virgin; The Stained Glass of Judith Schaechter”, Alex Baker, Free News Projects. The stained glass was the 42nd piece made after the artist graduated (the artist has now made 245). The theme has to do with the artists' birthday: St. Valentine's Day. The artist always hated being born on that day! Being an early piece, the technique is a combination of sandblasted flash glass, which is layered in the face area. The red and white lace is sandblasted with a handcut stencil. A lot of the piece--the face, gun, cat, padded cell background, putti and hearts are enameled with black vitreous paint, and there is a lot of silverstain in areas. Also some cold paint - for instance on the birds. It's important not to wash the glass. www.judithschaechter.com From Wikipedia: Judith Schaechter is a Philadelphia-based artist known for her work in the medium of stained glass. Her pieces often use symbolism from stained glass and Gothic traditions, but the distorted faces and figures in her work recall a 20th century German Expressionist painting style and her subject matter is secular. Shaechter's work often involves images that might be considered disturbing such as death, disease, or violence. Early Schaechter pieces, for example, such as King of Maggots and Vide Futentes make use of memento mori, symbols of death found in church architecture during medieval times. The Birth of Eve (2013) by Judith Schaechter at the Renwick Gallery in Washington, DC in 2022 Schaechter was born in Gainesville, Florida, in 1961, but spent her formative years growing up in Massachusetts. She has served on the faculty of numerous art schools, such as the Rhode Island School of Design. She is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Crafts Department at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Adjunct Faculty at the New York Academy of Art in New York, New York. Schaechter has also taught courses at Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle, Penland School of Crafts, Toyama Institute of Glass (Toyama, Toyama, Japan) and Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. She illustrated the cover for musician Andy Prieboy's 1991 album Montezuma Was a Man of Faith. Her work has been exhibited in the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Schaechter's Bigtop Flophouse Bedspins appeared in the 2002 Whitney Biennial. She has artwork in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Hermitage Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Corning Museum of Glass, the Renwick Gallery, among other public and private collections. Her stained glass artwork has been included in two survey textbooks: Women Artists by Nancy Heller and Makers: a History of American Studio Craft by Bruce Metcalf and Janet Koplos. Her piece Birth of Venus was included in Renwick's 50th anniversary exhibition This Present Moment: Crafting a Better World Judith Schaechter is a Philadelphia-based artist known for her work in the medium of stained glass.
