      GEORGE SCHARF 1788-1860 VIEW OF THE CAMP OF THE THIRD ROYAL ENGINEER DIVISION IN BOIS DE BOULOGNE, NEAR PAPY signed l.l.: G Sharf 1815 and inscribed verso: View of the Camp of the third Royal Engineer Division in Bois de Boulogne/near Papy watercolour over pencil CATALOGUE NOTE George Scharf was born in Maniburg, Bavaria. He studied in Munich and worked as a miniaturist and drawing master before leaving Germany in 1810. Four years later he escaped from Antwerp during the seige and joined the British army, with which he served at Waterloo and in Paris after the occupation. He made many drawings and miniatures of his fellow officers and in 1816 he settled in London.
