        Roy Schatt (1909-2002) Roy Schatt (1909-2002) JAMES DEAN, 1954. Vintage silver gelatin print, image size 225 x 182mm, sheet size 255 x 205mm, with the photographer's stamp and two Peter Rose Gallery stamps verso (one hand-annotated with the date). Roy Schatt photographed James Dean in 1954 for LIFE Magazine, and the resulting portraits, known as the 'Torn Sweater' series , remain some of the most iconic images of the young actor. The two men developed a friendship, and Schatt began teaching Dean photography until his death in September 1955. The present image was also used as the basis for the US Postal Service's 1996 32-cent commemorative stamp honouring Dean, the second stamp issued in the Legends of Hollywood Series. New York, 1964. 8 x 10 in. silver gelatin photograph (few light smudges to left margin, otherwise very fine condition). Schatt's studio stamps and signature to verso. Captured in 1964 when Malcolm X was a guest on the Long John Nebel Show on WOR Radio in New York City. During the program, Malcolm X, Nebel, and 3 other guests discussed African American identity, the effectiveness of protests, subconscious racial bias, and racial terminology with Malcolm X noting that the term "white" is not a just a description of skin color, but a word implying attitudes and privileged class. Photographer Schatt documented the popular radio show and its guests for over 17 years, capturing at least 4 images of Malcolm X.
