      Est: €120 - €150

Woodcut, 19,6 x 14,5 cm, laid paper, signed in block with monogram "HS with the shovel" (trimmed just outside border). - Christ on the cross surrounded by saints and martyrs. Hans Schäufelein (1480-1540) was heavily influenced by Dürer in whose studio he worked from 1503. He signed with his monogram and a small shovel - a punning reference to his name Schäufel. His prints and drawings provide an important link in the spread of the Dürer-style to Augsburg and Nördlingen. This woodcut is also one of the rare occasions where a woodcut print is not only signed by the designer, but also has the mark "M" of the woodcutter included at the center left cloud. Illustration to Johann Geiler von Kaisersberg "Schiff der Penitenz", Augsburg by Johann Otmar in 1514. Very clear and early impression. With Gothic letterpress on verso. - Ref. German Hollstein 807. - G. Bartrum, "German Renaissance Prints 1490-1550", London 1995, p. 148.

Woodcut on paper Germany, circa 1506 Hans Schäufelein (c. 1480/85 – c. 1540) – German woodcutter, printmaker and painter of Dürer’s time Sheet dimensions: 23.9 x 16.2 cm Matted under glass in partly gilt wooden frame: 46 x 34 cm Good condition One copy of the “Resurrection of Christ” is in the collection of the Germanische Nationalmuseum Nuremberg Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 3,000 Euro Condition: The sheet is in good condition according to age, showing a slight discoloration of the paper and foxing throughout. The paper dimensions are 23.9 x 16.2 cm, while the frame measures 46 x 34 cm. Hans Schäufelein (around 1480/85 – c. 1540) Hans Schäufelein (known as well as Schäufelin) was born between 1480 and 1485, presumably in Nürnberg. Schäufelein worked in Albrecht Dürer’s workshop from 1503 until 1507. He was a painter and graphic artist, but first and foremost, he worked as a woodcutter and illustrator of books. His artist’s monogram is composed of the conjoined letters ‘H.S.’ and a little shovel. There is no proof for his often-cited middle-name ‘Leonhard’. Schäufelein gained fame with numerous woodcuts, some of them commissioned by the Emperor Maximilian I. (cko) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
