      Ink on paper USA, 1956 Xanti Alexander Schawinsky (1904-1979) - Swiss painter, photographer and stage designer Signed lower right ‘Schawinsky’ Dated lower left ‘1956’ Verso with an Italian gallery stamp, the letter ‘S’ and inscriptions The auction record for a drawing by Alexander Schawinsky is set above 52,000 Euros Total dimensions, framed: 81.5 x 68.5 cm The drawing in black ink was created by the Swiss artist Alexander Schawinsky (1904-1979) in the year 1956. Depicted is an abstract and extremely dynamic composition. Alexander, ‘Xanti’, Schawinsky was a painter, photographer and stage designer who belonged to the Bauhaus-circle around Walter Gropius. The work is signed lower right ‘Schawinsky’ and dated lower left ‘1956’. The sheet is mounted steadily with adhesive stripes under a mat and framed. The sheet is slightly browned and there are handling creased. The frame shows traces of wear. The sheet is 62 x 48.9 cm in size, and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 81.5 x 68.5 cm. Alexander Schawinsky (1904-1979) The Swiss painter, photographer and stage designer Alexander Schawinsky belonged to the Bauhaus circle around Walter Gropius. From 1921 to 1923, he was trained in the architectural studio of Theodor Merill in Cologne. In 1923, he briefly attended the School of Applied Arts in Berlin. In 1924, he went to the Bauhaus in Weimar, where such influential artists as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Oskar Schlemmer and László Moholy-Nagy were his teacher. In 1925, he went at the Bauhaus in Dessau along with Walter Gropius. There he mainly devoted himself to experimental photography. In 1933, he emigrated to Italy. In 1936, he moved to the United States, whose citizenship he accepted later on. In 1941, he moved to New York, where he was primarily active as a painter from 1950.
