Scheidel, Franz Anton von: Der Schuppenpanzer einer Hawksbill'schen Meeres-Schildkröte

        Est: €2,600 - €3,500

Der Schuppenpanzer einer Hawksbill'schen Meeres-Schildkröte. -- Aquarell über Bleistift. 36,6 x 50,5 cm. Am oberen Bildrand eigenh. in brauner Feder betitelt: "Testudo Imbricata. Schuppenschild". Wz. J. Honig & Zonen. -- - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

1. Vente anonyme ; Munich, Sotheby Parke Bernet, 25 novembre 1981. 2. Vente anonyme ; New York, 20 janvier 1982, n°s 133 à 276.

A FOLIO VOLUME OF WATERCOLOURS OF BIRDS measurements note each page 505 by 363mm most sheets inscribed in black or brown ink with identifications in latin and/or german 115 sheets: 21 double-pages, of which 3 are folding; watercolour over pencil, some with touches of gum arabic; the binding calf-backed marble boards, the spine gilt in compartments, with red morocco lettering-pieces stamped: scheidtl/III. Classe/Hühnerartige/Vögel, with red edges to the paper NOTE Like lot 97, this is a highly important voume of natural history illustrations by this celebrated Austrian painter, and assistant to N.J. Jacquin at the Schönbrunn Gardens, Vienna. Here, however, Von Scheidel illustrates birds, rather than fish. The majority of the artist's subjects in this volume are game birds, some European and some exotic, and mostly drawn to actual size. In the case of larger birds such as the turkey, the peacocks and some of the pheasants, this has necessitated his making the drawing on a double-sized sheet, which has been folded so as to fit into this folio volume. After the game birds come a number of watercolours of domestic poultry, and then some of doves, crows, waders, and various other birds, including a small penguin. Several of the drawings bear inscriptions identifying the birds, often in Latin and German together, and a few indicate where the artist saw the birds in question, and when; the dates on the drawings range from 1769 to 1772. Clearly, Von Scheidel drew many of these birds from specimens kept in private menageries; those mentioned by name include the collections of Franz Hannibal, Graf von Thurn, and of Rudolph, Graf von Abensperg und Traun, on his estate at Pockflüss. One drawing, of a chicken, is actually inscribed to indicate that it was drawn from the life by Hr. Scheidl, Mahler in Wien, 1772. [Mr. Scheidl, artist in Vienna, 1772].

        Est: £25,000 - £35,000

A FOLIO VOLUME OF WATERCOLOURS OF FISH measurements note each sheet 507 by 366mm most sheets inscribed in black or brown ink with identifications in latin and/or german 80 sheets; watercolour over pencil, some with touches of gum arabic; the binding calf-backed marble boards, the spine gilt in compartments, with red morocco lettering-pieces stamped: scheidtl/fische, with red edges to the paper NOTE Natural history drawings, watercolours and illustrated books were produced in considerable quantities from the late 16th century onwards, and particularly in the post-Linnaean drive to classify the entire natural world. Most of these were, however, devoted to subjects such as plants, fruits, birds and mammals, and compendia devoted to fish are actually relatively rare. One important early fish book is the set of 68 plates published by Albert Flamen in 1664, and in the 18th century Jacob Theodore Klein published his epic, five-part Historiae piscium (1740-49), but these were both monochrome publications. The first elaborate colour plate publication on fish seems to have been Marcus Elieser Bloch's, Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische, Berlin 1782, which contained over 400 colour plates. The present volume may well have been executed around the same time as, or even before, that groundbreaking publication, and is a highly unusual, and very beautiful, early example of a series of elaborate watercolours of a wide range of fish, both local and exotic. Von Scheidel was a leading Austrian natural history painter, who assisted N.J. Jacquin, director of the Emperor's menagerie and gardens at Schönbrunn, in Vienna. Von Scheidel made several thousand drawings of plants, birds and mammals for Jacquin, as well as many works for other patrons, including, presumably, this remarkable fish book. For an album of his bird illustrations, see lot 99.

A FINE PAIR OF FINISHED WATERCOLOURS FROM THE ACCOMPLISHED NATURAL HISTORY ARTIST FRANZ VON SCHEIDEL. Franz von Scheidel worked in Vienna with Nicolaus Joseph Jacquin (1827-1817), producing botanical watercolours for the latter's Flora Austriaca and Hortus botanicus Vindobonensis. In addition, Scheidel produced work for Friedrich Martini's huge work on shells Neues systematisches Conchylien-Cabinet. The present drawings appear to have originally been part of a bound collection of zoological drawings. Another drawing from the same collection (of an Ermine) was sold in London in April 1989 (Sotheby's 25-27 April 1989 lot 25). 'With three exceptions, all the genera of [the Iguana]... family belong to the New World... where they occur as far south as Patagonia, while extending northward... as far as California and British Columbia' ( Encyclopedia Britannica 1911, XIV, p.295). The family of the Monitor lizard (containing 46 members) is more widespread, and representatives are found in Africa, Asia and Australasia. (2).
