              Andreas Schelfhout,  Dutch 1787-1870-  A sailing boat on choppy waters, with a steamboat beyond;

              Est: £4,000 - £6,000

              Andreas Schelfhout,  Dutch 1787-1870-  A sailing boat on choppy waters, with a steamboat beyond;  oil on panel, signed 'A. Schelfhout' (lower right), 23.5 x 36 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  While best remembered for his picturesque ice skating scenes, leading Dutch Romantic artist Andreas Schelfhout was also a prolific painter of maritime scenes, and the work presented here is a typical example.  The present scene is likely datable to the 1840s, when Schelfhout produced several similar seascapes. A larger panel sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, 29 April 1998, lot 304 (£86,870), and features a closely related fishing vessel in the foreground. Another similar work is illustrated in Cyp Quarles van Ufford, 'Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870). Landschapschilder in Den Haag', Leiden 2009, p. 166, no. 175.  The paddle steamer with the cloud of black smoke billowing from its chimney stands in stark contrast with the humble fishing vessel in the foreground, and shows the incongruous and rapidly changing landscape of a world in the midst of industrialisation.  We are grateful to Christiaan Lucht MA for confirming the attribution to Schelfhout on the basis of photographs, and for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.

              Oct. 15, 2024

              ANDREAS SCHELFHOUT (The Hague, 1787-1870). "Harbour in winter". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower margin.

              Est: €5,500 - €6,000

              ANDREAS SCHELFHOUT (The Hague, 1787-1870). "Harbour in winter". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower margin. Measurements: 23 x 27.5 cm; 39.5 x 43.5 cm (frame). Andreas Schelfhout was a remarkable landscape painter of the Dutch romanticism. The harbor setting shown here (probably the city of The Hague) is imbued with lyricism. The lampposts, bent by the continuous incidence of strong blizzards, connote the scene with a melancholy note. Among the old houses, the farmhouse with its stepped roof stands out against an electrified sky, announcing a storm. Silver lights filtering through the clouds reflect on the snow covering the ground and on the frozen lake. The meticulous attention in the description of the peasants is combined with a splendid atmospheric capture. Dutch painter and watercolorist known for his landscapes. Framed within the Romantic movement, his Dutch winter scenes with frozen canals and skaters became very popular already during the artist's lifetime, to the point of making him one of the most influential Dutch landscape painters of his century. Also of interest are his works as an etcher and lithographer. Schelfhout began as a house painter in his father's business and soon began painting in his spare time. After a well-received exhibition in The Hague his father sent him to receive a proper education with the artist Joannes Breckenheimer (1772-1856). Schelfhout not only learned the technical aspects of painting but also made detailed studies of the Dutch landscape artists Meindert Hobbema and Jacob van Ruisdael. In 1815 he opened his own studio. Thanks to the excellence of his technique, his sense of composition and a natural use of colors he soon also became famous both inside and outside The Hague. In 1819 he was awarded the gold medal at the Antwerp exhibition. In 1818 he became a member of the Amsterdam Academy of Visual Arts. His reputation continued to grow and in 1822 he was awarded the rank of Fourth Class of the Royal Netherlands Institute. From then on one exhibition followed another. Initially, Schelfhout painted mostly summer scenes, beach and animal paintings, but because his early winter scenes were so successful he began to include them in all his exhibitions. Schelfhout was primarily a studio artist guided by his sketches done au plein air. His sketchbook, Liber Veritatis (Book of Truth), shows that he made twenty works in one year some of them abroad. This indicates that he traveled around 1825 and in later years visited France in 1833, England in 1835 (mainly to study the work of John Constable) and Germany. In 1839 he is awarded a knighthood in the Order of the Dutch Lion and in 1844 he is made an honorary member in Kunst zij ons doel. In 1847 he was accepted as a member of the Pulchri Studio. Schelfhout taught many painters who would later become famous such as: Johan Jongkind (one of the forerunners of impressionism), Charles Leickert, Johannes Josephus Destree, Jan Willem van Borselen, Nicholas Roosenboom, his daughter Margaretha and her husband Johannes Gijsbert Vogel, Willem Troost, Louis Rémy Mignot and his son-in-law Wijnand Nuyen. From time to time he also painted with Hendrik van de Sande Bakhuyzen, an important romantic landscape painter, and there is at least one canvas bearing the signature of both. Schelfhout advocated the use of watercolor in outdoor sketches and his watercolors greatly influenced Jongkind, Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch and Willem Roelofs, painters who would later become prominent members of the Hague School. Schelfhout encouraged Weissenbruch and invited him to attend his classes but it is unclear whether Weissenbruch attended. Schelfhout's death on April 19, 1870 marked the end of the Romantic period in the Netherlands and he is considered one of the forerunners of the Hague School.

              Andreas Schelfhout (Dutch, 1787-1870) A winter landscape at sunset with windmills and skaters signed lower left 'A. Schelfhout' oil on canvas 51 x 66cm Provenance: Recorded in an inventory of items belonging to the present vendor's family in 1888, Thence by descent Schelfhout was a principal figure of the Romantic movement in Holland and the idyllic atmosphere of the present picture demonstrates why he became known as the ‘Claude Lorrain of winter scenes’. Despite this idealism and lack of topographical accuracy, the artist’s compositions were formulated from various individual elements that he’d directly observed from nature. Indeed, Schelfhout was a great advocate of en plein air sketching and travelled to England in 1835 to study the work of John Constable. This, combined with his great technical skill, meant that Schelfhout’s work retained a fidelity to nature reminiscent of the great Dutch Golden Age masters who likewise influenced him. The artist himself was hugely influential, teaching and inspiring the next generation of Dutch landscapists such as Charles Leickert and Johan-Barthold Jongkind.

              WINTERLANDSCHAFT MIT FIGUREN AUF DEM EIS Öl auf Holz. 29,5 x 24,7 cm. Rechts unten signiert „A. Schelfhout“. In vergoldetem Prunkrahmen. Unter hohem Himmel im leicht rötlichen Licht der untergehenden Sonne eine verschneite Landschaft mit einem kleinen zugefrorenen Fluss, der sich vom breiteren Vordergrund durch eine niedrige Brücke zu einer Ortschaft im Hintergrund schlängelt, von der eine Kirche zu erkennen ist. Auf dem Eis wenige Figuren mit Schlitten und Schlittschuhen, sowie ein Jäger mit Gewehr. Linksseitig zudem ein hoher, kahler, weit verzweigter alter Baum. Stimmungsvolle Malerei, die Atmosphäre eines Wintertages vermittelnd. Das Gemälde wohl um 1812 entstanden. Schon seit Lebzeiten waren die Landschaften von seiner Hand sehr beliebt. Er malte sie sorgfältig, mit großem technischen Raffinement und mit einem starken Gefühl für anekdotische Details. Schelfhout war einer der größten Spezialisten der holländischen Landschaftsmalerei des 19. Jahrhunderts. Seine Gemälde knüpfen sichtbar an die große holländische Tradition des 17. Jahrhunderts an. Zu Schelfhouts Schülern gehörten unter anderem Charles Henry Joseph Leickert (1816-1907), Johan-Barthold Jongkind (1819-1891) und Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (1803-1862), Lodewijk Johannes Kleijn (1817-1897) und Nicolaas Johannes Roosenboom (1805-1880). Beach scene with Fishermen in windy Weather (1844) Signed and dated 44 lower left Oil on panel, 26.8 x 34 cm Provenance: - Private collection, Germany - Auction Weinmuller, Munich, 13-15 March 1974, lot 1786 (ill.) - Private collection, the Netherlands Note: Andreas Schelfhout was a prominent Dutch landscape painter and lithographer, renowned for his mastery in capturing winter scenes and the serene beauty of the Dutch countryside. Born in The Hague, Schelfhout was initially trained as a decorative painter in his father’s workshop before pursuing formal art studies. His meticulous attention to detail and ability to render light and atmosphere gained him widespread acclaim. Schelfhout's works are characterised by their crisp, clear compositions and delicate colour palettes, often depicting figures on frozen canals, beaches or in rural landscapes. A key figure in the Romantic movement in the Netherlands, Schelfhout’s influence extended beyond his own prolific output. He played a crucial role in the development of Dutch landscape painting in the 19th century, mentoring younger artists such as Johan Barthold Jongkind and Charles Leickert. His paintings were highly sought after during his lifetime, earning him numerous awards and exhibitions across Europe. Today, Schelfhout’s works are held in major collections, including the Rijksmuseum and the Teylers Museum.
