He has been a dedicated practitioner of the medium since 1974, when he first saw Jasper Johns’ encaustic paintings as a student at the Royal College of Art in London, England. Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, is done by dissolving pigment into melted wax and quickly applying it on the chosen support. Although the process is meticulous and labour-intensive, it produces beautiful translucent layers, such as those seen in Still Life, which can be slowly built up to give a rich depth to the finished surface.
