    A. SCHMIDT (1796-1866), Statue, Frederick the Great, 1850, Pencil

    Est: €300 - €400

August Schmidt (1796 Generate - 1866 Hannover): View of the statue of Frederick II, Schadow statue of Frederick the Great from Stettin in Berlin, statue in Berlin, 1850, Pencil Technique: White heightened Pencil on Paper, mounted on Cardboard Stamp: Verso Collector's stamp, Lothar Wengerzink. Inscription: lower left signed: "Aug. Schmidt". Inscribed by another person: "Friedrich II. / Standbild in Berlin / Bleistiftzeichnung (mit Weiß gehöht) / von August Schmidt 1850". lower left dated: "50". Date: 1850 Description: Schadow places the king in the pose of a general, but has him leaning his staff on two books. The face bears very fine features. The artist thus shows the contradictions in the great king's character: warlord and musician, brutal conqueror and fighter for justice. Schadow's statue is considered the most expressive of all Friedrich monuments. It was painted by the German porcelain and portrait painter and lithographer Friedrich A. Schmidt. Several coloured lithographs are in the possession of the Hanover Historical Museum. Person: Friedrich der Große, Der Alte Fritz; King Friedrich II., Prussia Hohenzollern (1712 Berlin - 1768 Potsdam) Frederick II or Frederick the Great, popularly known as "Old Fritz", was King of Prussia from 1740, King of Prussia from 1772 and Margrave of Brandenburg from 1740, making him one of the electors of the Holy Roman Empire. He came from the Hohenzollern dynasty. The three Silesian Wars he waged against Austria over the possession of Silesia led to German dualism. After the last of these wars, the Seven Years' War from 1756 to 1763, Prussia was recognised as the fifth great power in the European pentarchy alongside France, Great Britain, Austria and Russia. Frederick is regarded as a representative of enlightened absolutism. He described himself as the "first servant of the state". He implemented far-reaching social reforms, abolished torture and pushed for the expansion of the education system. Keywords: 19th century, Figurative, Portraits, Germany, Size: Paper: 16,5 cm x 11,2 cm (6,5 x 4,4 in)
