    "Empusa". Aquatintaradierung in Olivgrün auf Similijapan. 38,5 x 28 cm. 1894. Eine finstere, in einen dunklen Mantel gehüllte Gestalt mit Schlangen im Haar nimmt das Mittelfeld einer dreigeteilten Komposition ein. Zu ihren Füßen steht ein Räuchergefäss, aus dem unendliche Rauchschwaden aufsteigen. Der leere Sitz einer Zauberin mit Totenschädel und Schlange links sowie eine seltsame Blume mit herzförmigen Blüten rechts rahmen die mysteriöse Gestalt. Bei ihr handelt es sich um Empusa, ein weibliches Schreckgespenst mit wechselnder Gestalt aus dem Gefolge der Unterweltsgöttin Hekate. Empusa wird von ihr geschickt, um Wanderer und Unglückliche zu erschrecken und im schlimmeren Fall ihren Liebhabern das Blut auszusaugen. Carl Schmidt-Helmbrechts wählt ein Sujet, das in der bildenden Kunst einzigartig zu sein scheint, aber für den Symbolismus und dessen Affinität zur Spiritualität und Magie geradezu prädestiniert ist. Prachtvoller, gratiger Druck mit breitem Rand. Etwas vergilbt, der breite weiße Rand mit leichtem Oberflächenschmutz, geringfügig stockfleckig und mit leichten Knick- und Knitterspuren, weitere geringe Altersspuren, sonst in guter Erhaltung. - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.
