Inscribed 'A Schmidt-Michelsen' and 'Paris 5, rue Alfred Sievens' (barely legible) as well as titled 'Mussestunde' on verso Verso on the stretcher with three old labels Dimensions: 57 x 41.5 cm Very good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany The painting impresses with its richness of detail, the fineness of the painting as well as the particular richly ornamented art nouveau frame The painting presented here was created by artist Alexander Schmidt-Michelsen in 1884 and is provided with the title 'Mussestunde'. With great attention to detail the artist presents an interior scene with a musician playing his piano. The room looks like a Cabinet of Curiousity since it is decorated with various collectible objects such as stuffed birds and peacocks, a collection of feathers and fans in the Far Eastern-style as well as other exotic decorative objects that are placed on the piano and moreover various paintings hanging on the walls. The painting is signed, dated and located lower left 'Alexander Schmidt Rolandseck. Aug 84.'. It is further inscribed 'A Schmidt-Michelsen' and 'Paris 5, rue Alfred Sievens' (barely legible) as well as titled 'Mussestunde' on verso. The work is overall in very good condition, occasionally minor touch ups around the edges, otherwise of excellent impression. The image measures 57 x 41.5 cm, the framed dimensions are 67 x 51.5 cm. The frame shows minimal signs of wear. Alexander Schmidt-Michelsen (1859-1908) Alexandre Schmidt-Michelsen was born 1859 in Leipzig. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and later went to Paris, where he further studied under William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. He remained in Paris for several years and finally settled in Berlin in 1892, where he became a member of the Berlin Secession. Alexandre Schmidt-Michelsen worked mainly as a genre painter.
