Prominent contemporaries such as Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein, Emperor Franz Josef, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and Karl Lueger modelled for him. Schmutzer exhibited his works internationally and received several prizes and awards. In 1901 and 1905, he received gold medals at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. In 1901 Schmutzer became a member of the Vienna Secession, and in 1908 he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna as a recognised master of his field.
