JULIAN SCHNABEL (AMERICAN B. 1951)UNTITLED (MONJAS DE CALLE CON BUEN OJO)Oil and resin on rubberised fabric 213.5 x 152.5cm (84 x 60 in.)Painted in 1993. Provenance:Waddington Galleries Ltd., London Acquired from the above in 1996Painter-director Julian Schnabel has enjoyed international renown for his powerful aesthetic vision. Among the first artists represented by Mary Boone, Schnabel has since exhibited at Pace Gallery, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and Museo Correr. His large-scale works tend to incorporate an element of collage, as the traditional marriage of oil and canvas is adulterated with an admixture of resin, textiles, and even ceramic shards. The present picture, which reads 'Monjas de calle con buen ojo', or 'Street nuns with a keen eye', belongs to a series by the same title. A typically obscure juxtaposition of concepts, this imposing canvas reflects Schnabel's preoccupation with religion and literature. His decisive mark-making allows for striking visual effects: the calligraphy of 'ojo' for example, resembles a face, while the sinuous dividing line suggests the form of an amphora. Schnabel treats his thematic concerns with parity: the holy and the profane, tradition and modernity, abstraction and figuration.

"Best Buddies" by Julian Schnabel, 1992 Signed Serigraph. Paper size is 58 x 44 inches, with an image size of 58 x 44 inches. The Serigraph is from an edition size of 90 and is not framed. The condition was rated A-: Near Mint, very light signs of handling. Additional details: This large, four-color silkscreen print by Julian Schnabel, created in 1992, is a striking piece that showcases the artist’s signature style. Produced as a benefit edition for Best Buddies International, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the print embodies both artistic and philanthropic significance. Hand-signed by Julian Schnabel, the print is also numbered 77 out of an edition of 90, and dated '92 in pencil, adding a personal touch that underscores its authenticity and limited availability. The combination of the artist’s renowned style, the charitable cause, and the limited edition numbering makes this print a valuable and meaningful addition to any art collection.

            Est: - €1,300

American Modernism Schnabel, Julian Childhood 1. 2016. Giclée-Pigmentdruck in Farben auf schwerem Velin. 80 x 57 cm. Pigment print in colours on heavy wove paper. Signed, dated and numbered. Spot-mounted on underlying mat and framed under glass. - Overall very good and extremely fine. Splendid, rich and colour-fresh impression of the format-filling depiction. - One of 45 copies. - Sheet 1 from the 4-part portfolio of the same name. - In the graphic cycle "Childhood", Julian Schnabel deals with a significant event in American history and shows the iconic battle scene with the hard-fought victory of the American troops under George Washington over the British troops. The victory marked the beginning of America's independence. Schnabel works with the "American Revolution Wallpaper", which hung in the White House until 1999, as a template for the image theme. By reworking the colours, Schnabel creates contrasts to the charged scene, frames the heroism with purple and blue accents and also creates a further layer by imitating cracks and alluding to the wallpaper, which was taken down after 1999 and hung in a different location. Artist: Julian Schnabel, American (1951 - ) Title: I'd Rather Have a Live Woman than a Frozen Leopard Year: 1990 Medium: Screenprint, signed and numbered in pencil Edition: 16/60 Size: 35.5 x 28.5 in. (90.17 x 72.39 cm) Frame Size: 41 x 32 inches Publisher: Paris Review Description: This screenprint by Julian Schnabel resembles a collage in its composition, a technique popular with the Pop Art movement. A photograph of a woman in black and white is overlaid with a French speech bubble and text in messy black handwriting that says the name of the piece. This piece is nicely framed in silver and signed and numbered in pencil by the artist.

Painting is the discovery of oneself. Every good artist paints what he is." This is especially true of Schnabel; he is as one with his works. The very choice that he makes to use sometimes enormous formats satisfies many demands, the most important of which (…) is that of cancelling out the spectator when he encounters the work. One is met with a challenge, an attack, a swallowing up. Our daily world, which is made up of conventions, habit, rituals, is replaced by the one created by the artist. It is an art, therefore, which tends to position itself at the extreme limits of our perception and to fill our world with its own existence in a continuous attempt to destroy the bonds with pictorial tradition. When we stand before Schnabel's work, we are whisked away to a distant epoch in which art had a more active role in rituals, magic and in life itself than today. The expressive violence (which is above all biological) characterises the (perhaps illusory) explosion of freedom of the vastest eclecticism and Alexandrine thinking which we have encountered to date”. Lorenzo Sassoli de Bianchi, in catalog of the artist's retrospective held at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, Bologna (22 November 1996 - 30 January 1997)
