Julian Schnabel Walt Whitman (Waterfall 1). 2016. Pigmentdruck auf schwerem Velin. 126,5 x 95 cm. Signiert, datiert und bezeichnet "e.a.". Pigment print in colours on heavy wove paper. Signed, dated and inscribed. Spot-mounted on underlying mat and framed under glass. - Overall very good and exceptionally fine. Splendid, rich and colour-fresh impression of the large-format depiction. - Artist copy aside the edition of 25 copies. - Julian Schnabel refers to the American poet Walt Whitman in a number of his works, including 'Walt Whitman (Waterfall 1)'. He is considered one of the most influential American poets of the 19th century. Both deal with motifs such as nature, individuality and the experience of the world. Schnabel's work is often seen as a visual parallel to Whitman's poetic explorations of human existence and nature, as both utilise an expressive, unconventional, powerful and highly dynamic formal language to create deeper emotional and spiritual connections.

Provenance:Waddington Galleries Ltd., London Acquired from the above in 1996Painter-director Julian Schnabel has enjoyed international renown for his powerful aesthetic vision. Among the first artists represented by Mary Boone, Schnabel has since exhibited at Pace Gallery, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and Museo Correr. His large-scale works tend to incorporate an element of collage, as the traditional marriage of oil and canvas is adulterated with an admixture of resin, textiles, and even ceramic shards. The present picture, which reads 'Monjas de calle con buen ojo', or 'Street nuns with a keen eye', belongs to a series by the same title. A typically obscure juxtaposition of concepts, this imposing canvas reflects Schnabel's preoccupation with religion and literature. His decisive mark-making allows for striking visual effects: the calligraphy of 'ojo' for example, resembles a face, while the sinuous dividing line suggests the form of an amphora. Schnabel treats his thematic concerns with parity: the holy and the profane, tradition and modernity, abstraction and figuration.

American Modernism Schnabel, Julian Childhood 1. 2016. Giclée-Pigmentdruck in Farben auf schwerem Velin. 80 x 57 cm. Pigment print in colours on heavy wove paper. Signed, dated and numbered. Spot-mounted on underlying mat and framed under glass. - Overall very good and extremely fine. Splendid, rich and colour-fresh impression of the format-filling depiction. - One of 45 copies. - Sheet 1 from the 4-part portfolio of the same name. - In the graphic cycle "Childhood", Julian Schnabel deals with a significant event in American history and shows the iconic battle scene with the hard-fought victory of the American troops under George Washington over the British troops. The victory marked the beginning of America's independence. Schnabel works with the "American Revolution Wallpaper", which hung in the White House until 1999, as a template for the image theme. By reworking the colours, Schnabel creates contrasts to the charged scene, frames the heroism with purple and blue accents and also creates a further layer by imitating cracks and alluding to the wallpaper, which was taken down after 1999 and hung in a different location.
