Walter Schnackenberg Two Costume Designs: Clowns and Pan 1920 pencil and watercolor on card 12.125 h x 14.875 w in (31 x 38 cm) 12.125 h x 14.875 w in (31 x 38 cm) Schnackenberg was very involved in theatrical work and created numerous set and costume designs. Here, for an unknown performance, he envisions the cast in ornate costumes; annotations detail measurements of the stage and provide instructions to the stage builders. In the first design, Schnackenberg depicts famous dancers who he illustrated in other works: Lo Hesse, Joachim von Seewitz, Grit Hegesa, and Sent M'Ahesa; in the second image, he imagines the costumes and set design for a performance featuring Pan, the Greek god of the wild. ARTIST: WALTER SCHNACKENBERG (1880-1961) SIZE: 36 1/4 x 48 in./92 x 122 cm PRINTER: O. Consée, München DESCRIPTION: There is a delicacy of expression on the faces of both the viewer and the dancer that elevates this extraordinary design far beyond the standard theatrical poster. This gifted German artist could be one of the poster collector’s favorites, if only there were some more posters of his to collect. He did only a few, and all of those, printed in very small quantities, are so rare that most poster enthusiasts never come across them. A cultured, sophisticated painter, Schnackenberg did most of his poster work for acquaintances in Munich theatrical circles. His designs are a quaint amalgam of caricature and fantasy which he himself called “suggestive dreams.” With an unerring instinct for color, and an exquisitely refined taste for subtle irony, he created a body of work that is uniquely individualistic—small, but choice. ARTIST: WALTER SCHNACKENBERG (1880-1961) SIZE: 35 3/4 x 46 3/8 in./90.6 x 117.8 cm PRINTER: Consée, München DESCRIPTION: One of Schnackenberg’s finest creations, this couple exudes Art Deco style and sensuality. “One of Munich's finest amusement venues, where the elegant world gathered after the theater and concert, was the Odeon Casino, for which Walter Schnackenberg designed a series of unusual posters. His vampy type of woman with a pageboy haircut and a fashion that anticipated the 1920s was a sensation and provocation in Munich at a time when the busty, sumptuously equipped ladies of the Wilhelmine era still dominated the image of women. [Schnackenberg’s woman was] thus a powerful motif for the ‘Jeunesse dorée’ (golden youth)” (Plakate München, p. 92). But there is also a sense of the uncanny, especially with the male dancer who emerges out of the shadows, his body confined to the darkness around him. It’s a perfect example of this artist’s “scenes of a decadent morbidity” (Weill, p. 111). (Art Nouveau; Dance; Cabaret; German)

        Ballet und Pantomime. 1920.

        Est: $14,000 - $17,000

ARTIST: WALTER SCHNACKENBERG (1880-1961) SIZE: 15 5/8 x 20 1/2 in./39.7 x 52 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: This is the complete portfolio of twenty-two plates, published by Georg Müller Verlag in Munich, loose in the original binding. Nowhere is Schnackenberg’s theatrical phantasmagoria better exemplified than in these twenty-two costume designs. Not only are the images exquisite—the amalgamation of Eastern inspiration, animalistic animus, and otherworldly envisioning all but defies realistic description—but they are also rare, important, and irreproachable artifacts from a distant performance era. “When we remember this [dance renaissance] movement [in Germany] we think of the Munich art fests and performances in theaters and concert halls, which came out of this art-loving city thanks to the collaboration of creative artists. Among those who actively and knowingly took part in this movement, the painter Schnackenberg attracted attention with his creations. His planes, figures, and drawings make it clear that in dance and pantomime, we can reclaim the right to rejoice in the beauty of the body, the striking pose and the animated movement. Glowing colors delight the eye, joy of life shines in the lightness, and the bright colors convey to us that the world need not remain grey and colorless if we have the courage to be guided by our yearnings” (From the Forward by Von Gleichen-Russworm). ARTIST: WALTER SCHNACKENBERG (1880-1961) SIZE: 34 1/4 x 49 1/8 in./87 x 124.7 cm PRINTER: Oscar Consée, München DESCRIPTION: Although she had no formal dance training, Lena Amsel rose to stardom in the vaudeville and theatrical circuits of Dresden and Berlin before moving into film around 1918. This poster is from that pivotal year when she burst into film, in part due to her friendship with Max Reinhardt. Schnackenberg depicts her as an expressive, swanlike figure, contorting at impossible angles while her shadow plays on the back wall. She died in an automobile crash in 1929 while racing against André Derain. (Art Deco; Artist: Schnackenberg; Dance; German)

Consée, München DESCRIPTION: One of several posters Schnackenberg created for this Munich-based ballet duo, this image promotes an act they dubbed “Light and Shadows”—a spin on the “Beauty and the Beast” theme. It is at once highly expressionistic and extremely tender, and employs a remarkable balance of emotions in a visually gripping composition. Schnackenberg borrows some of Lautrec’s silhouetting to create the menacing plane of the devil’s black shadow, while the girl’s figure—formed from the white of the paper—slashes through the darkness. The effect makes her appear candescent. (Art Deco; Artist: Schnackenberg; Dance; German)

ARTIST: WALTER SCHNACKENBERG (1880-1961) SIZE: 14 x 19 1/8 in./35.5 x 48.5 cm DESCRIPTION: Provenance: The Schnackenberg Family Archives. While best known amongst poster collectors for his vibrant Expressionist designs of the early 1910s, Schnackenberg’s later works have recently received an abundance of art historical interest. In the 1950s, his style turned toward the surreal, and he created languid street scenes populated by eerie characters oftentimes washed in a blue or green light. This is one such design from that series, in which a billposter hangs the latest announcement for the Eldorado while a gnarled older woman yaws a complaint against the ad’s overt sexuality. Nearby, a curious black cat dips its paw into the wheat paste glue. (Modern; Posters on Posters; German)

In the period leading up to World War I, Berliners danced as fast and as hard as they could. Hotel ballrooms were grand places to fox-trot the night away and dance teams were very much in demand as nightclub performers. Despite the memorable name of this twosome (who Schnackenberg smartly depicts in brown rather than the usual black), no information about them survives. The design bears a strong resemblance to the artist’s Odeon Casino (see prior lot) and this work, created in the same year, very well may have been a brilliant study for the more styled, decadent poster yet to come (see Peter Pathe / Maria Hagen, PAI-LXXXV, 428). Each was richly printed on high quality paper. The work featured hand-colored pochoir lithographs (some with gold hi-lites) and some photogravures. Oskar Bie provided introductory text for the work. Walter Schnackenberg (1880-1961) was an important poster and commercial artist as well as costume and set designer. He was a student at Stuck and a member of the Luitpold group.

This fantastic costume illustration is from Walter Schnackenberg's Ballett und Pantomime.... The work was published in Munich by Georg Muller in 1920. This was the first and only edition and was limited to 900 copies. The plates are presented in hinge mounts on larger card. “When we remember this [dance renaissance] movement [in Germany] we think of the Munich art feasts and performances in theaters and concert halls, which came out of this art-loving city thanks to the collaboration of creative artists. Among those who actively and knowingly took part in this movement, the painter Schnackenberg attracted attention with his creations. His planes, figures and drawings make it clear that in dance and pantomime, we can reclaim the right to rejoice in the beauty of the body, the striking pose and the animated movement. Glowing colors delight the eye, joy of life shines in the lightness, and the bright colors convey to us that the world need not remain grey and colorless if we have the courage to be guided by our yearnings.” (From the Forward by Von Gleichen-Russworm) Alexander von Gleichen-Russwurm was the godson of King Ludwig and Friedrich Schiller’s heir. Walter Schnackenberg (1880-1961) was an important poster and commercial artist as well as costume and set designer. He was a student at Stuck and a member of the Luitpold group. He took influence from Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's colorful and sumptuous posters. He eventually devoted his work to stage design and costumes, mastering form and ornamentation in his illustrations.
