Originaltitel Darstellung des historischen, dänischen, dreimastigen Kriegsschiffes auf hoher See im Mondschein - die "Christian VIII." war ein dänisches Linienschiff, das während des Schleswig-Holsteinischen Krieges 1849 zerstört wurde. Großes, frühes, 1885 in Hamburg entstandenes Hauptwerk des Marinemalers, der 1886 Meisterschüler von Hans Gude an der Berliner Kunstakademie wurde. 1887 debütierte er mit dem Gemälde "Marine (vor Sonnenaufgang)" in der Jubiläums-Ausstellung der Kgl. Akademie der Künste in Berlin; seitdem beschickte er häufig und erfolgreich die Akademie-Ausstellungen, Großen Berliner Kunstausstellungen sowie Ausstellungen in Wien, Bremen etc.; 1890 erwarb Kaiser Wilhelm II. das in der Akademie gezeigte Gemälde "Hilfe in Sicht". 1891 gründete Schnars-Alquist mit Max Liebermann, Walter Leistikow und anderen die "Vereinigung der XI". 1896 wurde er zum Professor ernannt und ging 1898 von Berlin zurück nach Hamburg.     Dreimaster auf stürmischer See. -- Öl auf Leinwand. 61,5 x 92,5 cm. Unten rechts signiert, bezeichnet und datiert "Schnars-Alquist / Hmbg./ 1917". -- -- Hugo Schnars-Alquist entstammte einer angesehenen Hamburger Kaufmannsfamilie und folgte anfänglich seinem Vater in diesen Beruf. Nebenher bildete er sich jedoch auch selbst im Zeichnen und der Malerei aus und erzielte schon vor seiner förmlichen Ausbildung als Meisterschüler von Hans Gude an der Berliner Kunstakademie erste Erfolge. Gleich nach seinem Abschluss an der Akadmie vertrat er die deutsche Delegation auf der Weltausstellung in Melbourne und wurde dort sogar Jurymitglied. 1891 gründete er mit Ludwig von Hofmann, Franz Skarbina, Max Liebermann, Walter Leistikow und anderen die „Vereinigung der XI“, eine der wichtigsten sich vom klassischen Kunstbetrieb der Zeit emanzipierenden Künstlergruppen, die 1898 in die Berliner Secession mündete. Im Jahre 1893 wurde Schnars-Alquist zum Professor berufen und siedelte von Berlin nach Hamburg zurück.     Oil on cradled panel Northern Germany, 1912 Hugo Schnars-Alquist (1855-1939) – German marine painter Signed, dated and inscribed ‘Schnars-Alquist, Hbg 1912.’ Dimensions: 22.7 x 39.8 cm Frame: 43 x 60 cm Very good condition Provenance: Private collection, Northern Germany The small painting shows the high waves of the North Sea with white foam. Dark clouds in the sky announce an approaching thunderstorm in the background. Condition: The painting is a very good condition. There is only minimum rubbing in the outer margins under the frame. There is a tiny little spot rubbed and with loss of color little above the signature. One of the two wooden strips on the reverse is missing. The broad color-coordinated frame has some small damages. The painting measures 22.7 x 39.8 cm and the frames dimensions are 43 x 60 cm. Hugo Schnars-Alquist (1855-1939) Hugo Schnars-Alquist was born in Hamburg as the son of a merchant family, initially he also took the merchant profession. Likewise he began painting seascapes as an autodidact. In 1884 he decided to attend the Berlin Academy of Art, where he was a master student of Hans Gude. Together with Max Liebermann, Walte Leistikow and others he founded the "Union of the XI’ in 1891 and in 1896 he was appointed professor in Berlin. Two years later he returned to Hamburg and became a member of the Hamburg association of artists in 1832. His numerous voyages taught him to paint the sea in all seasons and in all moods. His pictures were owned by the German Emperor Wilhelm II or Chancellor Bernhard von Bülow and are in public and private collections. The stretcher measures 64.5 x 75.5 cm. The frame shows only small marks, but appears in good overall condition. It measures 70 x 90 cm. Carl Wilhelm Hugo Schnars-Alquist (1855-1939) A son of a long-established merchant family in Hamburg, Hugo Schnars-Alquist became a successful marine painter, after being active as a merchant for a short while. Numerous study trips allowed him to discover America, England, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. In 1886/89 he became a master student of Hans Gude (1825-1903) in Berlin. In 1898 he established himself in Hamburg and continued to travel overseas. His oeuvre is characterized by marine and seascapes. Works by Hugo Schnars-Alquist are preserved, for instance, at the Hamburg Kunsthalle and many private collections in Germany.
