      L. SCHNELL (*1790) after KAUFFMANN (*1741), The mourner, Indian ink

      Est: €2,850 - €3,800

Ludwig Friedrich Schnell (around 1790 - 1834 ) after Angelica Kauffmann (1741 Chur - 1807 Rom): The mourner, 19th century, Indian ink Technique: Indian ink on Paper Inscription: Signed and inscribed below the image: "Ang. Kauffmann del. | Die Traurende", inscribed on the verso by the artist: "No. 1 2 tes Bändchen [illegible street name]". Date: 19th century Description: The topos of the woman with urn, a popular symbol of mourning friendship in Sensitive Classicism, is encountered in Angelika Kauffmann's work as early as the 1960s: in 1767 Kauffmann produced a painting for General Stanwick in memory of his daughter, who died on the passage from Ireland to England. The mourning Agrippa at the urn of Germanicus from the present depiction comes from the same world of ideas. Kauffmann drew it for her friend Friederike Brun, née Münter in the family album of the Brun family. Schnell follows this drawing in his engraving for Brun's book of poems of 1812. Our sheet could have served as a model for the engraving. The position of Kauffmann's name as the creator of the composition, which differs from that of the engraving, suggests this. The notes on the reverse regarding the position of the picture in the book and which volume of Brun's poems it concerns also make Schnell's authorship conceivable. Keywords: Sensibility, Funeral Epitaph, Mourning, Figure, Allegory, 19th century, Classicism, Religious, Germany,
