RELIGIONSKRIEG MIT ZAHLREICHEN SOLDATEN UND EINEM PRIESTER Öl auf Leinwand. 48 x 64 cm. Links unten signiert „V. Schnetz“. In vergoldetem Rahmen. In bergiger Landschaft unter grau bewölktem Himmel, der nur mittig an einer Stelle aufklart und den blauen Himmel erkennen lässt, findet eine Schlacht mit zahlreichen Soldaten in Rüstung und Helmen statt. Im Zentrum eine Gruppe heftig kämpfender Soldaten mit teils zu Boden gegangenen Pferden, die durch den vom Himmel fallenden Lichtschein besonders erhellt werden. Am rechten unteren Bildrand, verschattet liegend, mehrere Soldaten und ein Pferd, auffallend zudem ein großes, auf einem Sockel stehendes Kreuz. Im Hintergrund rechts weitere zahlreiche kämpfende Soldaten. Linksseitig auf einem wohl von Ochsen gezogenen hohen Wagen ein Priester in weiß-goldenem Gewand, die Arme wohl betend zum Himmel erhoben, in Begleitung eines Messdieners und mehreren, Fanfare spielenden Männern. Die drastische Darstellung des Kampfes mit verschiedenen Waffen dürfte einer der Religionskriege sein, bekannt auch als Hugenottenkriege, von denen es eine Reihe von acht Bürgerkriegen in Frankreich zwischen Katholiken und protestantischen Hugenotten gab, die in den Jahren von 1562 – 1598 stattfanden. Schnetz h: 60 w: 48 cm Commentaire : Élève de David, de Gros et de Gérard, c'est en tant que " chef de file d'une nouvelle peinture de genre1 ", celle de scènes de la vie populaire italienne, que Victor Schnetz s'imposa au Salon. Ayant échoué au prix de Rome, il se rendit en Italie à ses frais à partir de 1817, séjournant à la villa Médicis tout en échappant aux contraintes académiques. Il put ainsi parcourir la campagne romaine, où il trouva l'inspiration dans les montagnes et les villages, représentant des paysannes aux riches atours s'adonnant à des activités champêtres et souvent dévotes. 'L'enfance de Sixte Quint', exposé au Salon de 1824 et conservé au musée des Beaux-Arts d'Arras (fig. 1), représente le jeune Félix Peretti, qui deviendra le pape Sixte V en 1585, sur les genoux de sa mère. Seules les armoiries du Saint Siège sur la pierre à l'arrière de leurs têtes permettent de voir dans cette œuvre colorée une signification plus historique que la simple représentation d'une diseuse de bonne aventure. 1.
