K. v. Aug Dietze d.J. gez. et. gest.". View of an antique epitaph, a monument or grave memorial for a deceased person. The richly decorated arched field shows in the upper register an offering at an altar, in the lower field a long triumphal procession in honour of the figure on the chariot can be seen in the centre. The depiction was made after a drawing by the painter Johann SCHNORR von CAROLSFELD, one of the most important representatives of Nazarene art. Unknown (19th century) after Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1794 Leipzig - 1872 Dresden): An offering at the altar of the goddess Diana, c. 1818, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Date: c. 1818 Description: inscribed on the left below the depiction "Nach Schnorr v. K. von Z". Two figures can be seen in a small clearing surrounded by trees and bushes. Dressed in antique robes, the man and the woman are holding hands, while the woman points towards an altar. There, a bowl and a vase are visible, together with the name "Diana", goddess of hunting, the moon and birth. The couple, it seems, is about to offer a sacrifice to Diana, goddess of women and midwife. Monogrammed and dated lower right: JS (joined) 1825Monogrammed and dated lower right: JS (joined) 1825Ludwig Schnorr von Carolsfeld travelled to Rome in 1818, remaining there until 1827. There he joined a number of other religiously minded German artists in the Nazarene group. The idea for an illustrated bible was developed in the mid-1820s, but was to be published much later in Dresden. The present image, dated 1825, is comparable to “Ruth on the fields of Boaz”, which was painted in the same year and is kept in the Ratjen collection. Schnorr's ink drawings for the “Bibel in Bildern” were transferred into non-mirror image woodcuts. The picture bible was published for the first time in 1860, and aimed to depict the most important scenes from the Old and New Testament using only Schnorr von Carolsfeld's 240 woodcuts and dispensing largely with biblical texts.
