'Afgelegen passarhoekje Bali' / Three Balinese women on a market signed 'Wolff Sch.' (lower right) and titled (on the reverse) oil on canvas, mounted on board, 47,5x31,5 cm Charles Prosper Wolff Schoemaker (Banyubiru 1882–Bandung 1949) was known primarily as an architect, but he was also a painter and sculptor. After completing his studies in Engineering at the Royal Military Academy in Breda, the Netherlands, he returned to the Indies, where he joined the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army as a military engineer. In 1911, he became the Director of Public Works in Batavia. Following a study trip to the United States in 1917, during which he studied the work of the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, he opened an architectural firm in Bandung in 1918 together with his brother Richard, who was also an architect. In Bandung, which was then known as ‘Java’s Paris’, he built several iconic structures, such as the Gedung Merdeka (formerly the Concordia Society), Grand Hotel Preanger, the Bethel Church, and his masterpiece, Villa Isola, which was commissioned by publisher and media magnate Dominique Berrety (1891-1934). His style, adapted to the tropical climate, was characterised by a mix of Art Deco, Frank Llyod Wright, native cultures, and Streamline. He converted to Islam, took on the name Kemal, and went on a pilgrimage to Mecca. In 1922, he took on the role of professor at the Bandung Institute of Technology, where he mentored one of his students, the future president Sukarno. The two became lifelong friends, and shared a love for beautiful women. Schoemaker’s love for feminine beauty is evident in two of his paintings, which depict Balinese women whose likeness he probably painted in Bali, possibly in the company of his friend Sukarno, who frequently stayed on the island.
